There is also the 3.5 inch barrel Colt in the Officer's ACP; and it's undressed, parkerized version call the Compact. I just purchased a used Compact & went to the range for short check-out with it. Four magazines, 28 Bam's in the target - couldn't ask for more.

By carry, I assume you mean concealed, Rules out the Ruger for me.
I've got a G30 and its a fine journeyman 10 rd. SA.
Colt's Defender is intriguing, but for less than $500?
The S&W 457 is pretty good. I like mine. Not too big, got 7 rds. Not too pricy. Accurate as well. Underrated.
I saw a slightly used CS45 for $369 the other day in a shop... almost came home with me. Re-thought, went back... too late. It was gone.
I'd like to get a NEW Taurus145 Millenium Pro and pray that all of the bugs are gone. I've got a PT945 which has also stood me well, and tho it's not small, its certainly no Ruger.
Taurus also makes a 2" stainless .45 Tracker and I've yet to hear or read about any horror stories on one of these. Should be around $400 new.
Having said all that, I'd still look for a used Commander LWT. Mine is a stainless Combat Commander and its no lightweight.

But that Tracker really gets me to thinking...

I am considering the same thing and am seriously considering the SW 457S. Just wondering how much recoil it would have.

My 45acp carry collection:
Glock 30
Kimber Pro Carry II
Sig P245

My fav would have to be the G30

I had a Glock 30 for several years. It was perfectly reliable, but I always felt uncomfortable with only the trigger safety on a CCW gun.

I now have a Para Ordnance 12.45 LDA. If making that purchase again, maybe I would pick a model with a longer barrel because I don't feel that barrel length is much of a concealment factor and you get a little more velocity.

I have a Glock 30 and it has been a flawless performer. The grip is very chunky though. If you've got average or smaller hands, I'd look for something a little skinnier.

I have a Ruger P 97. It's bulky but it carries OK in a fanny pack. As far as size......the P 97 is about the same size as a Glock 21. The 21 seemed more accurate. I believe the Ruger to be better built & it's less expensive.

For carry,I'd say the Glock 30 would be the better choice. I'm thinking about getting myself a 30.
