Looking for a Cannon

Last week I Flew to my hometown in upstate NY from my busy work schedule for a weekend of turk hunting. I used my fathers Ithaca MaG 10 cannon nick-named "Moose-****." My buddy and I had 2 large gobblers along with 3 jakes thunder gobble in to 25 yards and I blasted and bagged both gobblers with one shot. Captured on camera, it was an amazing experience.

I'm searching for one of these cannons to be my own....

They are still around, here and there, I have one. Remington bought the rights from Ithaca and the SP 10, I believe, is almost identical.

The Ithaca Roadblocker is the LE varient of that gun. If you can find one they are awsome. Mine is literally a cannon! The only thing I can think of that would be more awsome would be a 10 ga double with about 22-24" barrels, imagine letting off a couple of 3.5" mags from one of those at the same time!

The Mag 10 is a cannon. I've fired a shot or two from a couple belonging to friends, while the recoil was noticeable it was not painful. I did use good form and a wearable recoil pad.

Smith I knew had a Greener 10 gauge double with the barrels lopped off around 20". THAT was not so user friendly. His Load Of Choice used black powder and a handful of pistol balls, the sort used in 36 caliber Cap and Ball revolvers. Call it 0000.

IMO, the 10 is a bit much for HD. Like calling in an air strike on a cockroach.

A few years ago, there was a gent wandering around a gunshow with a two trigger 12ga 4-barrel. I wasnt interested in buying (an SVT40 had consumed my budget), but asked him a few questions about it. Yes, it is impressive to let off all four shot with 2 pulls, but painful and tends to leave unsightly bruises. If a 10ga in home defence mode is an airstrike, this sucker would have been an Arclight misson.

I was wondering a couple things. Since I don't have a shotgun (yet) or reloading equipment, how many .50 cal round balls could fit inside of a 12 gauge shell and how well would it shoot? I also remember reading about this guy who built his own 4 bore rifle. I wonder how much shot could be put into a 4 bore shotgun shell. I ask about .50 cal because I've got a muzzleloader and would love to see something shoot a handful of those things. How much pressure do shotgun loads create? Maybe a trip to old hardware store for some heavy duty piping....

The 4-barrel I saw would have been in the San Diego area some years back. Back when one could buy a rifle at a gunshow in California and expect to take it home that day....

As for exceedingly large bore rifles, there was a two-part article on an English shooter, posessing more money than common sense it would seem, in the "Double Gun Journal" about a year to one-and-a-half-years ago. He comissioned a true 1 bore single, and had to pay for the special proof stamp when it was tested. In any event, the Double Gun Journal has a truly impressive collection of photographs of beautiful examples of the gunsmith's art, with a truly impressive price tag to match.

The bottom 10 ga AyA matador has 20" barrels and is kept hidden(REALLY well and up high) in my den loaded with 54 #4 buck shot per tube and NOT the 2oz slugs pictured! It weighs 9.5 bounds and feels about like my 7 pound 870 with 3" mag buckshot.
I shot a Browning 10ga mag for all my Waterfowl and Turkey hunting!

Well, only about 3, maybe 4 would fit because of the diameter of the balls. They would have to sit one on top of the other, and I don't think they would pattern too well because of the angles they would have to lay in the hull. Now a single .690 round ball will work as a slug if you were so inclined...

I agree with kudu, the balls would be sitting offset to one another and woulkd, no doubt, go in wildly different directions as they exited the barrel.

Now the ol' "punkin ball" loads with 2-3 rounds balls the size of the bore, would be interesting.

Filler would make a minor diff in the pattern, IMHO the balls wouls stay together, but cannot imagine more than 2 balls in a load couldn't pass on that one. Anyhows~ 12 .690 round lead balls equal approx 1 lb., soo- 3 .500 balls would = 3oz(approx), a no-no. 2 balls would get you a basic slug load. BUT less accurate.BTW, I shoot and reload alot of 10ga stuff and haven't yet shot some 2 oz slugs yet that I purchased for WW3
