Maverick 88 or a Pardner Pump. Both are good inexpensive weapons that pritty much come set up for HD from the box.

first off, the pardner and norinco hawk/iac etc etc all accept 870 parts, correct? exc ept for barrel.

im probably going with a pawn shop/second hand 500, 870 or win 1200/1300 or a new chinese gun as long as it accepts 870 parts AND stocks...

Decided on what type of grip you plan to do? I can show you how to do an easy bird's head grip if you'd like.

Kinda sorta what I'm doing. The gun that I buy will double as hd/field. I going to have two stock sets for it, one sawed into a pistol grip, the other a nice full stock. One shortened forend, one nice. And obviously two barrels.

Swapping parts on a regular basis gets to be a hassle, you may find that you just end up leaving it in the vastly more versatile field configuration and call it good.

and stock cut and sanded into pistol grip
Why when ya can pick up a pistol grip for like 20 bucks if your really want that, heck some of the new mossbergs can be bought with one included

Maverick's are Mossberg's "Budget Line" The maverick 88 is a Mossberg 500 with a "less expensive" finish, and a different trigger assembly. Everything else is interchangeable with the 500.
Emm the forend is different also, the 500 models have a metal insert kinda dohickey inside the forend where as the model 88 doesn't.

I like my 88's. Afordable, reliable and the safety is where I like it. Since I leave it chambered I use my safety. For those that leave it slid open there isn't much point in putting the safety on.

NEF pardner protector.... essentially an all steel 870 for under 200 bucks new... already has an 18 inch barrel, and takes all 870 accessories (excluding barrels)

If you're seriously considering going the NFA route with it, spend the money it takes to get a 'brand name' gun to start with. Doesn't mean you can't find a good used 'big name' shotgun that isn't overly expensive, but IMHO you'd be better off spending all that NFA money on a platform that gives you a better chance of getting your $$ back later, if you ever decide to part with it.

fwiw,

Shotguns

I just purchased a like new 1970 870 Wingmaster for $200 at a pawn shop.
It was just pure luck, since I have looking for this particular gun for a long
time.

Keep looking and always get a well known American made shotgun.

Thanks,

Dan

Lemme see if I got this straight, you want to cut down a shotgun to look like a sawed off shotgun to use for home defense? Big fan of no country for old men, huh? Well, good luck in court with that if you ever have to shoot anybody with it. Legal length or not, you can bet any lawyer looking to cash in during a civil trial (even if it's a good shoot) is going to point out to your "sawed off shotgun" (you're a naive fool if you don't think that phrase won't be trotted out before a jury) and make claims of how you shot his poor client with that thing. Well, good luck with that.

Pardner Pump or Excell/Escort I think there is an Escort model made with an 18 in barrel.

I saw an old 870 Wingmaster sell for $119.00 a few weeks ago. It was rough, but would have cleaned up nicely for HD.

You're right. I'm going to keep a full stock on it most of them time. It's a project gun/hd/field type of thing. I'll keep it in field config 99 pct of the time. But yes, you're right...I got the idea from NFOM as well as Falling Down...always wanted a gun like that. Ain't gonna lie!

My personal preference is for the 870. I like them better than anything Mossberg- though the Mossbergs work.

I would get a used 870 and not look back.

At work we have Mossberg 590 shotguns but I am somewhat partial to the Remington 870. There is nothing wrong with the Mossberg as long as you don't put a sling on it. We have had a couple where the screw nut backed out and needed to be replaced. We later used locktite (blue) on them. There are alot of police departments trading in their 870s for the 1187P or some other semi-auto shotgun. You may be able to find a good used police 870 at a decent price. Some may even have the flashlight forend which may come in handy at night.

You ever shoot a shot gun with only a pistol grip?

Hey if you have and feel you shoot well that way more power to you.

If you haven't you might want to try it out before you start cutting.

I like the stock on the 870s I have at work, the PD ammo has some kick to it.
I wouldn't want to shoot that with only a pistol grip.

Probably 1,500 rounds worth, with at least 150-200 rounds of buck and slugs among it. It's not as effective as a shoulder stock, but it has it's niche.

+1 on the maverick 88 suggestion. I have the 20" 7+1 version and really think its a great shotgun for the $$$. IIRC it was $195 ~two years ago. I am past the 1000 round mark with it and zero problems thus far.

I'm partial to an autoloader for self defense only because I've seen too many cops in training "short cycle" a pump and cause feeding problems. I purchased a Remington Model 11 at a gun show for $160, had a gunsmith cut the barrel to 18", took it home and shot the heck out of it with Federal Tactical buckshot to make sure it works. Great HD gun IMO.
