I've got a lot of factory .270 ammo so I guess I need a new rifle.

Some years ago I tried the then new Mossberg, but hated it.

Can someone recommend a decent hunting rifle that won't break the bank and still put meat in the freezer?

I'll sell you my savage 111 pre-accutrigger synthetic stock :D 1.5 MOA it can shoot all day long :D

Ya'll probably get tired of me suggesting the same rifle over and over, but here she is.
Weatherby Vangaurd.
Just can't beat it for the money IMO.

Marlin XL7.
Mine is a 25-06 but some are having good luck with .270s.
Pretty good gun for the $$$.

Vanguard, Sav 110, Rem 700. I own them all. Great rifles.

All can be found without sights at smokin' deals (got my Vanguard at WalMart for $349 six months ago, got a Rem 700ADL in 270 the year before that for $325). Mounts are cheap. You choose your scope.

Tikka T3.

I owned one in a .270 and it was a great gun. Action was smooth as glass and accuracy couldn't be beat. Also, you can pick them up at a great price.

If I ever need another hunting rifle it'll definitely be a Tikka.

what accuracy are we talking about here? Because me and my firend both have savage 111 model in 270 win and the best groups we get with handloads are about 1.2 - 1.5 MOA

I don't know about in .270 but I've personally seen and actually even shot a basic Savage model 10 from Walmart in .243. It shoots .4-.55" groups with hand loads and it shoots around .8" groups with most cheap soft point factory ammo. It's just the basic setup with the accu trigger and the package deal Simmons scope. It's pretty impressive to me. I don't have much experience with other Savages though so I don't know if they are all this good of shooters but I assumed they were.

no what we have are 111 savages from Dick's scoped combo no accutrigger factory ammo shoots like 2.5 - 3 MOA

Oh okay I knew the model 11 was a little different than the model 10 but isn't the floor plate for the magazine basically the difference? Yeah I haven't had any experience with one of those. 2.5 - 3moa is horrible for a gun like that. I wonder what's different about them or if you guys just got bad ones.

probably, well they were good at first 200 - 300 rounds then they went south, I replaced scope recently thought it would solve my problem but it didn't, but we got them from the same Dicks so maybe bad run... I called Savage they told me 1.75" at 100 yards is within their specs...

There has to be millions of used 270's around.

Find a Western Auto, Sears, J. C Penny branded push feed Winchester M70. These have zero collector interest but are the same fine M70's they always were.

Or find an older Rem M700.

Really, why buy new when if you really get out there and look around, you can find a decent used rifle?

Just take a cleaning rod and push it down the barrel. If the barrel is not rusted, the safety works, the trigger works, the rifle is likely to be fine.

What kind of groups did you get for the first 2-300 rounds? I know it's a dumb question but how have you been cleaning it? Have you used a copper solvent to clean the copper out of the barrel?

no copper in the barrel, KG-12 took care of it... the groups were fantastic 0.3 - 0.5 with handloads and 0.75 with federal and winchester ammo, yes its free-floated I checked maybe something got stuck in the barrel or my muzzle crown went bad, I'll take it to gunsmith, with bore scope will be easier to determine what went wrong.. maybe barrel life ended, I did load on the hot side... 3100 - 3160+ fps...

everything mentioned thus far, new or used, is perfect. I will throw in with a Howa as well, and if the new T/C's havent' been mentioned, I will throw in with those also.

I had .270 Win rifles in Remington 700 Deluxe, a Vanguard VGX, a Vanguard synthetic, a Weatherby Mark V (9-lug), and a Sako Finnbear. All shot well. Far and away, the most economical is the Vanguard synthetic. The factory target measures 5/8". After the breaking-in, my handloads always come in between 0.5" to 0.75" at 100 yards. That particular rifle cost me $420.00 NIB 2 years ago.

Wow those groups really did go downhill then. I wonder what could have happened. I'm not familiar with what fps regular .270 loads are. Are those a lot hotter?

Did you shoot until the barrel got hot and then keep shooting? I'm just wondering what could have made the groups open up so much. If you get it figured out let me know as this has me really curious. No one I know with Savages have put more than a few hundred rounds through theirs so I wonder how they will be then.

Yep that's what we did... it was hot but not hot to touch :uhoh:

I'm fond of my Remington M700. But they have gotten more and more expensive. This is a good time of the year to buy a "deer rifle" at a gunshow. Folks buy them, use them for a couple outings, then sell for Christmas cash. Yes, good time of the year for buying.

Marlin XL7...awesome rifle ! I love mine ! I Put a Nikon 3x9 scope and a Harris 6" bi pod, butler creek flip up scope covers.I use my XL7 for everything from Feral hogs to deer here in North Texas.
