Looking for a good handgun safe

Right now I have two small safes in my bedroom, one for a half dozen handguns and one for a fair amount of ammo. I have a GunVault for the one I keep loaded for home defense. But the two small storage safes, each weighing no more than about 125 lbs certainly would not be a major problem for a burglar. I'm thinking about getting a more substantial safe, but right now I don't have any long guns and every safe I have seen is primarily shaped and set up for rifles and shotguns. I'm wondering if there is a good handgun designed safe that is heavy and strong enough to give me reasonable confidence that if my house is broken into while I am away I will return to find my guns and ammo (and important personal papers) still secure. Anyone have a suggestion?

Something you may want to consider if you've got the room.
Go for a "regular" gun safe that is set up for long guns, then go to your local hardware store and install shelving in between the bottom and top "slots" for the long guns.

Put your ammo towards the bottom (so as to minimize the load on upper shelves) and then go put a few of those handgun racks in the middle section, with papers,etc. on top.

I've seen someone use one of the medium sized "Job Boxes" , made a covering for it that made it look like a coffee table, put it in front of the couch, put some "Coffee Table" books on it and hid it in plain sight. You can modify the inside to hold a lot of handguns in a medium box.

Why not fasten down your existing small safes so a thief could not carry them off?

Look into used safes. I found a lot of smaller safes that businesses were selling on craigslist. Of coarse I was looking for tall safes. They would be perfect and some have much better fire protection than most gun safes.

You should get a large safe, where you can put all your valuables in, as well as handguns. You may buy long guns in the future. I have two Fort Knox safes, I out grew the larger one, the smaller one just has shelves and I put my camera bag on the floor of it. Each has a dehumidifier in it which is a must to keep metal objects from rusting. We live in the country, and have an excellent alarm system as well. These days safety and protection of your person, family, and belongings is of the utmost priority. Best of luck.
