I have a JM 1894 Marlin in 44 Mag I'll be packing intro a camp 12 miles into a densely forested island next month. It's an awesome trip but very hard on gear. My uncle broke the stock off his A-Bolt last time.

We can bring small deer carts so I do and always pack my rifle on my cart. The 1894 is 37.5" in length and has a Scout Scope mounted. Does anyone make a compact hard-sided rifle case? I'm hoping to bring something slimmer than my usual long rifle case or an AR case.

The island:

Does Pelican make anything that would be relatively lightweight?
Most of their models that I can find are 17 Lbs, which is a lot of weight to be trecking through the woods when you are bringing in 8 days of gear and hopefully packing out a deer...

I found a hard case at Cabela's a few years ago that's designed to fit shorter carbines very well. Just barely holds an AR and an AK together.
It's very similar to this one listed on their site for $99: http://www.cabelas.com/product/shoo...treme-lite-takedown-case/1788371.uts?slotId=5

No question it'd very well protect a rifle from most reasonable trail damage.

The only problem is it's a hair shorter inside than your rifle is long. You may be able to lay yours in diagonally though. It'll be tight. The diagonal would be just under 39" and that's probably just a touch too snug for your Marlin.

Plano makes a one gun polymer case that is pretty compact. Academy had them in a choice of colors for about $20. Plastic shell with foam liner on both sides. I use them because they're lockable at each corner for transportation.

Why not a floating shotgun case (more padding than normal case) and some bubble wrap from the post office? After all, It’s only for lugging in and out of camp.

Thanks for the suggestion but these wide cases still tend to be quite big (very wide) and it weighs 11 pounds.

I'm hoping for a standard "cheap" rifle case because they tend to be light but shorter than the the standard 52"... I'd love one this shape but 40":

Keep the suggestions coming. The cheap cases are a couple pounds which is perfect but to long our made for ARs (to tall). The nice cases are also to tall and very heavy for packing in.

I wouldn't mind a pricey case if it was sized just right for a lever gun...
