looking for a new HD shotgun

Over the weekend, I gave my old winchester 1300 to a recently widowed family friend for HD duty. I'm thinking of purchasing a new shotgun for HD duty. I was thinking of the mossberg maverick 20" 8 shot. I know it is a mossberg 500 clone BUT how does it hold up? are parts interchangable between a 500 and a maverick?

I can't speak for parts interchange (though I want to say no) but I can speak for reliability. Excellent. I have the 20" 6 shot. Very happy. Just like my Mossberg 500, eats everything I throw at it.

I have owned a couple Mossbergs and have been happy with them. They are good basic guns for the money. Some will say that they won't last the thousands of rounds as brand X will but as low cost as they are I don't really care. Currently I own a 590A1 that I got used in good condition. I have only shot 200 rounds through it but it has been 100% so far.

The new 930 Tactical looks like a nice gun for the money but it has not been out long enough for it to have my stamp of approval.

I know the barrels are interchangeable, but I'm not sure about the trigger assembly or other parts. I have the 500, so I can't make a direct comparison. however, a quick search of this forum will tell you, most maverick owners are very happy with them.

I have a 500A and my shooting buddy has an 88 and both have had thousands of rounds through them without and major issues. All of the issues that we have had wit them can be traced back to the ammo. All together we have had maybe 6 failures between both of them.

Just a quick update. I picked up an 8 shot maverick 88 yesterday at a gun show for $199. What a sweet shotgun for less than $200! I plan on taking out to the range later today. I will post a range report after.

i've got a 500 i've had for 19 years its had cases and cases of shells through
it and never once missed a beat i'm sure you will be happy with your 88!

I just got back from the range. I put 2 boxes of 7 1/2 bird shot, 30 rounds of fiocchi #00 and 4 buck and 10 federal slugs. It ate it all w/o a hitch I found it didnt recoil much for such a light shotgun! I'm VERY happy with this lil 12ga.
