You may have to wait a year or two for one of the used Rem .243s to show up on Gunbroker, in a pawn shop, gun show, etc., to get within your budget - probaby worth the wait (or get a 2nd job and up the budget). They're fairly new and selling well, and so not many people are parting with them yet - little to none on the used market.

That is really pretty much what I'm looking for if anyone else has other suggestions plz post

Is there a particular reason you're dead-set on .243?

If you want something as AR-15ish as possible, why not just get an AR-15 in 6.8 SPC (.27 calibre)?

If you want "powerful enough for deer, without too much kick", the 6.8 SPC appears to be popular for that. Maybe you can go read up online and see if it meets the game types and hunting conditions you expect to face.

If 6.8 works for you, you're in luck. It's probably the second-most common centrefire AR calibre these days, and a new 6.8 upper receiver isn't any pricier than a usual .223 version. You can save a lot of money by buying an AR-15 "stripped lower receiver" (still legally a firearm and will have to be bought by your parent), installing a "lower receiver parts kit", and then putting a new 6.8 upper on top of that.

By building your own lower, you could save several hundred dollars over the cost of buying a complete gun. Building a lower takes minimal tools, very little time, and basically no special skills beyond reading instructions.

A basic breakdown:

-Quality lower receiver, maybe $150 on a good day
-Good lower parts kit, $65
-Used stock assembly, maybe $30
-Good quality Rock River Arms complete 6.8 SPC upper, like so $540

So that's looking about $800, give or take a little and maybe some shipping (but at least no sales tax). Then just toss on some sort of optic, or get some used iron sights from an online forum. And that'd be a heck of a good rifle. Just make sure you get magazines that are limited to a capacity allowed for hunting in your area.

Is this the kind of thing you're looking for? I can't think of much reason to be absolutely stuck on .243 unless you just have cases and cases of it stockpiled in the closet. 6.8 fulfills a similar role, and is becoming more and more available every year.

But won't 6.8 be harder to buy shells for? Or harder to find shells?

Maybe locally not online you can find 6.8spc pretty easy and it is being produced more with growing popularity.

You're on the Internet, right? ;)

Basically every major online ammo dealer sells 6.8 ammo and mails it to your door. The prices will almost assuredly be better than your local store, and a better selection of loads. Price is pretty much comparable with .243 hunting loads, plus 6.8 is easier to buy in bulk if you want a bunch of cheaper plinking ammo for target shooting too.

So every online dealer carries it, plenty of stores carry it, and it's becoming more and more common every year. There is an increasingly belief that it may eventually replace 5.56x45mm as the standard round of NATO (Remington even stamped their ACR rifle "6.8 NATO", wishfully), but whether that happens or not it's certainly become popular fast.

If you want to shoot a true .243 Winchester cartridge, you have to go up to an AR-10, which is a larger, more expensive, less standardised, and rarer form of AR. The 6.8 will fit in a standard AR-15 with full parts and accessories compatibility (except bolt-face and barrel) with the millions of other AR-15s on the market.

Mabey, but like the guy abouve me said, the round is gaining popularity among AR shooters. The .243 has better ballistics though.

www.pantherarms.com (DPMS) makes good/great rifles.

Hope that you find what your looking for,

There are many, and they vary in both price and quality to some degree, but here are a few:
J&T
RRA
Model 1
CMMG

These are just a few, try googling "AR-15 Rifle kit 6.8 SPC" or something like that and you should get a lot of hits

Another thing to consider: 243 will be much shorter barrel life than 6.8. Matters if you plan to shoot it a lot.

If you decide to build an AR in 6.8 (which I still submit is probably your best bet, they way you describe your desires and budget), just read basically any good online article about building your own AR, and then do just that except get a 6.8 upper.

The barrel and bolt-face (plus mags) are the only difference, but the lower, parts kit, stock, etc. are all the same.

You may also be able to realise some notable savings by buying parts from the Equipment Exchange at AR15.com . That's the single largest online classifieds for buying AR gear. Probably best to buy the lower and parts kit new, but you can definitely find good deals on used stocks, and glancing now I'm seeing a variety of 6.8 uppers, ranging from inexpensive builds to top-of-the-line target pieces.

For example, last week this Rock River 6.8 upper sold for $500 complete with bolt and 3 boxes of ammo, plus a nice rail system. Note that often folks sell the upper without a bolt assembly, so factor in $100-150ish for bolt/handle if you need to buy it separately.

I'd suggest you go read up in several places about the ups and downs of 6.8, and if you choose that just read up a little on assembling an AR. The only part that needs to go through a dealer is the stripped lower, all other parts can be mailed to your door.
