I am trying to locate something for a friend. I remember around election time I would see adds saying something like "when they tried to ban handguns I did nothing because I didn't own any handguns...."

Does anyone have a source for the rest of this?
 
Here's the closest one that comes to my mind

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

I've seen a paraphrase (which I'll try to rough out from memory.)

First they banned machine guns
and I did not speak out
because I did not own a machine gun.
Then they banned assault weapons
and I did not speak out
because I did not own an assault weapon.
Then they banned handguns
and I did not speak out
because I did not own a handgun.
Then they banned sniper rifles
and I did not speak out
because I did not have a sniper rifle.
Then they banned my trap shotgun
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.
 
On that note. A buddy of mine had a picture posted in his gunshop window with an Native American in war bonnet in profile with the text "They ask me why Indian need repeating rifle? only Army need repeating rifle.....etc."

Always seemed a poignant take on the "assault weapon" screed to me.
