The ".22 starter" people have struck again. I guess they have some merit, but before I read the first few replies I knew exactly what was coming. Can't a guy just get a SKS for his first rifle? That was the first rifle I ever bought. Then again I was 17 and my first gun ever was a .22 Chipmunk when I was six.
For a .22, get a 10/22. They are super versatile. Sooner or later you are going to want to sink hundreds of dollars into your 10/22 to make it a super wonder .22, and the 10/22 is the easiest way to do that.
It really doesn't matter what you get first, it won't be your last. Everyone needs a .22 so what the heck, start there. By the time you are a junior, we expect you to have several rifles. I bought my M1A my junior year.
