Looking for advice on reloading .300 saum

I am fairly new to reloading, so please regard this as request for newby advice.

Among my various firearms is a Remington .300 SA Ultra Mag that I bought new five or six years ago. I still have about half of the first box of ammo I bought for it. Nasty kick that beastie has... and expensive to shoot out-of-the-box.

Since it is there on the rack and I'm really getting into reloading, I figure it is time to see if I can work up a good load for the .300 saum.

It is a longer ranger shooter, but I expect to be sighting it in at about 200 yds.

Soo....... Anyone hereabouts working with this caliber?? Any and all advice welcomed.

What bullets are you using? Powder? Know a good place to get dies? Anything special about this caliber that I NEED to know? Anything?

I loaded several hundred rounds for a 300 R.U.M. and then decided I didn't need it. I found that 100.5 grains of Accurate Arms Magpro powder was a very good performer. I used a WLRM primer and just about any plain base 180 grain bullet worked well. I had several boat tail style bullets shed their jackets, but I never used the expensive semi custom premium bullets.

The .300RSAUM is a different animal from the .300RUM.

It is actually a bit closer to the .30/06 than the .300wbymag. It was Remington's interpretation of the "short-magnum" concept. Some sources place the performance close the .30Gibbs or .30/06AckleyImproved cartridges. But, it gives this performace from a short action and 22" barrels.
ie: 2,850-2,900fps with a 180gr bullet.

The best powder choices for the .300rusm is either RL17 or H4350. RL19 as well as RL22 can be excellent choices as well. I've seen good results written up with Hodgdons H4831SSC as well. What you're going to see with the .300rusm is a limited case capacity as compared with the .300wsm or .300winmag.

Hodgdon's and Alliant's web sites are the best sources of data for the .300rusm.
I definitely recommend that you use Federal 215 primers for a spherical powders for optimum ignition.
This magum isn't as "over-bore" as many of the larger capacity magnums. The slow .50BMG surplus powders that work in the .300RUM, .30-378wby, and .300WbyMag won't work so well in this cartridge. RL17 was developed explicitly for this type cartridge. I've found it excellent in the .260Rem and 7mm08.

A friend in East Alabama has a .300wsm, and uses the 150gr Winchester Ballistic SilverTips. He's taken Colorado elk and a number of east Alabama deer with it and is very satisifed. But, if I were loading for and shooting a short mag, I'd look at at 165gr bullet as the performance on big game will be better. If looking to save money, the flat-based Sierra and Hornady as well as the Speer HotCor have been good bullets for the money. I used to recommend the Remington CorLokts as they were economically priced until about 3yrs ago. Now days, they are more expensive than the aforementioned "premium" grade bullets. I don't care for the Ballistic Tips in this caliber as they tend to over-expand. The Accu-Bonds have an excellent reputation in this area, but are a bit "pricey" for busting our "little" deer.
