I picked up another AR at the beginning of summer and I'm finally getting around toputting some glass on it. I have the following scopes on my other ARs:
-nitrex by weaver 1.5-5x32
-redfield 2-7x32
-mueller 3-10x44 tac II and
-mueller 2-7x32.

I'm trying to decide if I should pick up one of the discontinued vortex viper 2-7x32 scopes on sale over at SWFA for $150 or grab another Redfield or Mueller 2-7 scope.

Any opinions / input?

My Redfield is very nice but I went with the 4-12x40 for just a little more $$ so I could more easily reach out further.

I've never tried the Nitrex or Redfield, but have tried a few Vipers. The Vipers are really nice and should work well, as long as it isn't going to go on any hard kicking rifles. The Vipers that I tried had a pretty short eye relief, which is fine for a .223/5.56. On a .308 it could be iffy depending on your skills with recoil management and shooting position. On a .338 ultra mag, it's out of the question.

I have the Vortex Viper 2-7 (also on clearance from SWFA) and I'm very impressed with its quality. I would vote for that, or the Nitrex 1.5-5. Nitrex is a new name but they seem to be simply Weaver scopes, probably equivalent to the Grand Slam series, and those are good scopes.

The vortex is nice, but out of that list, i would get the Nitrex. I like my weavers.

The nitrex by weaver tr1 1.5-5x32 scope is nothing more than a re-badged weaver grand slam for less than 1/2 the price. I'm leaning towards the vortex viper if nothing more than trying something new. Plus every time I read a thread about scopes, there are half a dozen recommendations for vipers.

All those are very nice but you are going to love this one...
Burris timberline 2-7. I picked up 5 of them online for 120 bucks and put them in a few systems and uppers that didn't have scope.
They are awesome and they were on sale. Light, precise, quick acquisition, amazing eye relieve.
I have other tactical scopes, used holographic sites and I love the versatility of these little scopes.

Obviously redfields are nice but the footprint of these is amazing. very small yet effective.

Thanks for all the input folks! I just ordered the vortex viper 2-7 from swfa. I really liked that c3 recticle and the price ($161 otd). Once I get glass on the AR it's time to see what the nordic/wilson barrel can do with some match 75gr ammo;)

Think you will like the scope. If there is anything wrong with the scope call Vortex and they will fix it. Great company and for many the Viper is a great scope. Think TonyAngel had a problem with the first Vortex he purchased but evidently the company replaced or fixed it for him; dunno haven't talked to him about it. I have red dots and scopes from Vortex and as far as a price point and quality I have been happy with their products/company.

Just a quick update, I put the Vortex Viper on my AR and all I can say is WOW!!! What a nice scope for the money! Crystal clear glass and very nice turrets. I also love that C3 recticle. When I pick up a 7.62x39 upper this fall, it will have a Viper on top of it!

Glad you like it. I like the turrets and have not found anything for my purposes I do not like, especially for the price I paid. Another satisfied customer....I knew I should have purchased stock in the company when they first came out!!
