Personally I would choose it either for general use "around the farm" or for concealed carry. I think a 4" GP-100 would be a great general use gun and I recommend it. I think both the SP-101 and GP-100 are too heavy for concealed carry. So, I would suggest you consider the Ruger LCR in 38spl. I do like the LCRx with the exposed hammer and 3" barrel... it would be much much easier to conceal and the added inch of barrel would probably be easier to hit your target with beyond 10 yds.

The Ruger SP101 is a nice revolver.

If after shooting it you are feeling brave you might even consider doing your own trigger job:

Even if you don't want to mess with the springs or polish the internals, that is a good guide for disassembly of the Ruger SP101 and GP100.

What Palindin7 said, and I will give my .02 also.

Don't forget the older model guns.
Think SP101 = Security Six
357 in short barrel will get old fast.
What I know now and as you posed the question
I would go with the 4 inch.

Pistols.
Third gen. Smiths.
I have used a 645 around the farm and hunting for years.
Eats everything including shot rounds.
Plenty of steel. Could probably beat a bear to death with it.
Carries ok with the right holster.

Good Luck :)

NICE! :)

Do we get a range report?

Haven't been able to get it out to properly run it through the the paces yet but was able to put 50 rounds of 38 and 50 rounds of 357 through it.

First impressions:
-38s are a dream to shoot out of this gun.
-going to have to do some work on my double action trigger pull.
-would love a grip that can support my pinkie finger.
-357s are fun to shoot but I would not want to shoot them all day.
-when shooting single action the accuracy I was much better then expected

I have done some light gun smithing and trigger jobs on a few rifles so I'm sure I will try this out eventually. Thanks for the link.

Little update on the sp101. I've shot about 150 round of American eagle 38 snd another box of 357. I've settled on some Hornady critical duty for home defense while waiting on my CCW.

This was off hand at 7 yards
