I shot a Beretta 686E 20ga yesterday, and although I didn't like the way it shot, handling it (its stock was about 1" shorter than mine) made me want to have the stock on my SX2 fitted. I'm 5' tall, so you can probably guess that most stocks are made for people with slightly longer arms than me. While I'm at it, I'd also like to have the trigger lightened. About how much would it cost to have the above work done, and how long would I be without my gun? I realize that only the smith can give me actual figures, but I'd like some ballpark figures just so I know what I'm getting myself into. Are there any other modifications I should look into having done at the same time? I'm not looking to spend a ton of money, but I'm open to any additional suggestions. Dave McC posted the name/phone # of a gunsmith in this area a while ago, but I can't find the thread. Thanks

There's Scott's on Thelma Ave over in Glen Burnie. He put a scope on my Savage 110 for a reasonable price.....work seems like it was good.

Nico,

You are asking for two seperate services. First you want the stock fitted on the SX2 and second the trigger lightened. You are looking for a stock fitter and a gunsmith. Sometimes the two are colocated at one shop, often times not.

While I have never used their gunsmithing services, Jack Bart of Bart's Sports in Glen Burnie is an outstanding stock fitter. I have used his expertise to get my trap gun fitted. They can also lighten your trigger (and wallet too!). For more info on Bart's check with Dave M. offline. I vaguely remember that at one time he worked there?

If you feel brave, you can fit your own stock, Roland Oswald has a nice 50+ page monograph on stockfitting. Great info and practical advice. You are given the mental tools to use the physical tools to change the fitting on your gun. Also you can convey your fitting needs to a gunsmith to reshape your stock. Roland advertises on trapshooters.com. It is about $16.95 via paypal delivered electronically. Just do a search for Roland. (Be advised that there is strong opinions about his advertising techniques.)

As for a gunsmith in Maryland, I use RA Brown in Westminster. Brownie is a second gen gunsmith learning from his Dad. Great man and one heck of a shot. Also he will talk your ear off with advice and stories. I recommend him highly. His prices are good too!

Bart's for the stock, Scott's for anything else. Both are good shops but they do have their niches. If you need directions to either let me know.

Thanks for the replies guys. Does Scott's have a website? Does anyone have an idea of how much stock fitting trigger work would cost and/or how long it would take? I'm not looking for exact numbers, just ballpark figures.

I would bet against a website for Scott's.

It's that old school tradtional kinda' place, ya' know? Where the dog lays on the floor and greets you long before the owner does......

I wasn't going to toot my own horn, but since Joe tooted it for me... (Thanks, Joe. ;))

My Dad and I do stockwork and trigger/action work on a wide variety of shotguns, including the Winchester SX2. PM me or send me an email if you want to discuss details.
