I need some help finding a hard gun case, airline approved, that can carry 2 firearms (shotgun, rifle). It cannot exceed 62 linear inches. United will charge me $100 (each way) extra if it exceeds 62 linear inches. Other airlines allow cases to exceed without charging but I'm already locked into United this time.

Looks like a nice case, but the Dimensions: (in inches) 51.75 (l) x 11.25" (w) x 3.875" (h) exceed 62 linear inches. this case is almost 67".

It seems like mostly a problem with United because they will charge for excess of 62 linear inches, other airlines seem to allow greater than 62 linear inches for a firearm case.

I read that as 62in in length sorry. Not sure your going to find a gun case designed for two guns that will work. But that might be what they are counting on. Can you have two single cases?

IMO, if your longguns will not be taken apart, you will have a difficult time finding a quality hard case to fit both unless they are pretty short.

Cases like Hardigg's Storm iM3300, Pelican's 1750, Starlight's 061352, and even DoskoSport's Gun Guard All Weather Rifle will all excede 62 linear inches.

What size guns are you going to transport? Will you be able/willing to take them out of their stocks if they are too long? Hardigg, Pelican, and Starlight make smaller cases but lengths are much shorter.

thanks for the responses. Most cases that I've looked at are about 52-52" in length, but when the width and height are added in, exceed United's 62 linear inch limit.

I'll have to break, field strip, my guns and try to find a case whose length is around 40".

Hardigg Storm iM3100 : 39.8" x 16.5" x 6.7"
Pelican 1700 : 35.75" x 13.50" x 5.25"
Starlight 061338 : 6" deep x 13" wide x 38" long

You can probably save some room if you cut the foam so that the stocks go in standing up instead of on there sides (if the case is deep enough).

The Winchester cases from Walmart would be fine. I'm sure that it will take a beating and you will not want to use it too many times. Eventually you'll want something like a Pelican case. The 1750 is the largest that I know of and will cost about $200 if you are lucky (go Midway). It's 53", 1700 is 38", and the 1720 is 44". I have a 1750 that I am flying with next week. :neener: Northwest doesn't have the 62"linear stipulation.

I also have an Aluminum single rifle case that I flew once with that was fine, but it got the crap beat out of it. It did protect the rifle, but it isn't as handsome as it once was.

Can't help you with the case, but a word of advise about shipping guns via commercial airlines: make sure your guns are insured for theft. TSA is notorious for stealing from passengers (I had money ($5 in quarters for laundry) and personal belonging stolen from bags 'inspected' by these idiots), and cased guns are an easy item to spot; as an alternative, you might want to let Fedex or UPS ship your valuables.

Cabelas "Bulletproof" aluminum cases come in a
variety of sizes I have two for pistols and the one
they adverttise for the AR15 / TC Encore holds my
Marlline 1894 THey make double rifle cases also.
even ones you can roll with a handle.
top notch stainless steel hasps and a SS rod for
locking with a solid brass padlock they also sell

You could define 62 linear inches ?

THe alum. case I have for the Marlin is 44 inches in
length about 4 inches deep and 14 inches wide.
Cabelas offers double rifle cases for shotguns if they are
taken down or and up to two scoped rifles Go to the
web site and look at the dimensions. The cases
have the corners cut at a 45 deg. and then welded
back up with corner plates for gorilla handlers.

Can't you check it in with a lock on it and not have them
open it up ?? ?

One thread I read about this is to show up with the thier rules
printed out because the people behind the coutnter may not
have a clue.

perhaps the FedEx or UPS option would be most secure.

IMO, I wouldn't trust the Plano Airglide for air travel. The case itself is pretty good for everyday range trips (I have two myself and plan to get one or two more) and storage. Relatively good secure (velcro straps) protection for a single rifle with a small scope (target turrets won't fit).

However, not water proof, the latches are not the most sturdy and are not protected and the plastic thickness is not enough to prevent very heavy luggage from denting it inward (but would probably rebound to its original shape) intruding in the gun space. Won't fit the two guns mentioned above. Plus, it screams longgun.

Homers;

Go to: www.freedomarms.com. Look on the left side black ovals & find Bear Track. These cases are absolutely heavy duty, top notch goods. They are also expensive. However, I do believe that if you contact Freedom Arms, they'll build what you need, and it'll last your lifetime & then some.
