Looking for info. on a Weatherby Vanguard in .300 Weatherby Mag.

I just bought a rifle from a forum member (has not even arrived to me yet), but don't know much about it. I know it seemed like a good deal. Anyhow it is a Weatherby Vanguard chambered in .300 Weatherby Magnum. I guess I am looking more for information about this particular round and it's effectiveness for hunting deer, hogs, etc. Thanks for the help.

if you do your part and use the right bullet it will kill anything on the planet. deer pigs bear elk moose out to 700 yards or further. i cant shoot that good it will take rhino elephant hippo and cape buffalo to but is not a legal size caliber. I'm not sure but i think its 375 and larger for those pacific animals but the rifle would kill them for that matter so would the 30 06 with the right bullet placement and would have to be a lot closer. that caliber if for long shoots like eastern oregon or the beanfields. up close say like 100 to 300yards id use a 30 06 or 270 , 308 if i was hunting for elk or moose or brown bear, polar bear from 100 out to 600 700 yards .then id use 300 .you no what though im not the smartest nut in the bag if you reload you could slow that rocket down a lot down to say 2900 with a 165 grn part and that would not blow up the deer i think some one will come on here now and give me the you dont no what your talking about speech all bs aside i wish your 300 was mine

you should be satisfied with the weapon. Weatherby rifles are for the most part well made guns. As far as the caliber itself. The .300 Weatherby will kill anything that you will more than likely wont too. There isnt a deer or a hog out there that can take the report of that rifle and not meet his maker. The only downside is that unless you reload you are going to find the price of ammo putting a dent in your pocket book. $50-60 per box.

.300 Weatherby is a massively-powerful round that will topple most all North American game. Deer and hogs will have absolutely no chance even at longer distances if the shooter does his job. It also shoots flat way out there. Keep in mind that like all the Weatherby Magnum cartridges it is quite expensive and has rather impressive recoil, so unless you're hunting out West I'd consider moving down in caliber to something like .30-06.

Congrats on your new rifle! That thing is a HOSS when it comes to distance & power! I can only follow the other responses with similar advice. It's probably too much rifle for shots under 150 yards on medium skinned animals. Further distance & thicker skinned animals....it's perfect for....

Imagine a 200 grain bullet traveling at 3000 FPS........wow!
