Hello all,

I did searches, checked Ruger's website and did some looking around, but I just want to get some definitive info regarding the current Ruger American Predator in .308.

I want to get the Predator in .308 with the 18" barrel. From what I've seen, this configuration is available one way. I want to be able to run 10 round mags.

Do all of the Americans now come with the interchangeable magwells? Will I be able to convert to AI pattern mags?

I recently got an American Ranch and fell in love with it. No, it isn't slick like a Tikka, but man does it shoot. It is truly a shooters tool to those for whom a rifle is a means to an end and not the end in and of itself. In other words, for me, it gives no pride of ownership, but I sure do love what I can do with it.

I have a Cabelas about an hour from me. I just wanted confirmation on the use of AI mags. I tried calling but they didn't know what I was talking about and I'd prefer not to take the ride for nothing.

The factory Ruger mags are AI style mags. My Predator did not come with a detachable mag-style magwell so I bought one from Ruger for $28. I then bought a bunch of P-Mag AI-style mags.

When I bought mine in 2021, Ruger had stopped selling the rifles with the detachable magazine magwells, but still sold the kits to upgrade them. Apparently they are now offering them from the factory again.

This was mine from the factory in 2021...

And then with the conversion done and a giant 10-round AI P-Mag inserted...

I've had a couple. They shoot great. As far as I know you should be able to get one that takes AIC "style" magazines or at least convert it to do so.

The 5 round mags are better. The ones holding 10 rounds are too much of a good thing and are in the way. Plus when fully loaded would sometimes cause feed issues for the 1st round or 2.

I preferred the Mag-Pul 5 round mags. At the time they cost less than Ruger mags AND they have built in plastic tabs on the follower limiting capacity to 5 rounds where required. If not required where you live you break off the tabs for a 6 round mag. That was enough for me.

I didn't try the Magpul 10 round mag. It may be better than the Ruger version.

No, it isn't slick like a Tikka

I went from Ruger to Tikka. While I liked the Ruger they are now overpriced IMO. I paid around $350 each for Predators in 308, 6.5CM and one in 223 that takes AR magazines. I still have the 223, but have replaced the 308 and 6.5 with comparable Tikka's. At this point a Tikka isn't that much more expensive and is the better value for me.

I actually ended up with two 308 Tikka's and chopped one's barrel to 19". When using easily available Tikka 5 round mags I have the same rifle as the Ruger without the threaded barrel. Which I didn't need anyway.

That is weird that they don't make them that way. You'd think it'd be the most obvious for AI mags. Should be easy to convert it with cheap factory parts. It's the STANAG magazines that I believe pose a problem with the earlier guns, as the bolt is different to feed from the staggered magazine.

Put some elbow grease into them and they can be surprisingly slick lol.
Cdnn had some Americans on sale when i looked earlier also
They do slick up pretty nice. I have around 500 rounds through my 7.62x39 and I have no complaints. Even that "zip" noise is gone. Either that or I just got used to it. Lol
