Ok, so currently I have your standard .22 rifle, and i have a Mosin Nagant. However I'm looking to buy a new or used gun. One thats a bigger caliber than a .22. I want a rifle that is going to give me good range and good accuracy. One for fun at the range but also gets the hunting done. I love the size of the Mosin's bullets.

I've shot all types of calibers, so going bigger than the 7.62x54 is not a problem. I've been checking out .30-06's. Im not a big gun guy (right now), but I love shooting.

Any advises on what brand/model you'd recommend? What do you use thats both good for the range and hunting?

I live in cali and trying to keep it under or close to $500.

thanks

Marlin XS7 in 308. Or a used Savage or Remington 700 in 308. I would recommend 308 because it is easy to find, fits your purposes, and you can easily find Match 308 rounds. The 06 is a great choice too, just not as many factory loaded Match rounds.

I'm in the same exact boat my friend, I've nearly worn out my interest in trying to precision shoot the 10/22s, even though I know I'll still shoot them the most... But like you I presume, I want to reach out a bit farther, faster, flatter - maybe without playing the "bad ammo" card with those fliers, and really really actually know that I flinched or gaffed the shot. My most wanted rifle list is 1 -Savage 10fp in 308 and 2 -Rem 700 likewise 308.

Many a flame war has begun over the virtues of th 06 vs 308, the nutshell version, I'll save you the pain -is that an -06 has the case capacity to be a better hunting round at >300yd on big game, but a 308 is (for whatever reason) favored in the precision circles. And yes I know they're the same projectiles, the 06 has more volume - if you need it, if I do my part, yadda, yadda.

If I ware a hunter - and I'm not, I'd probably opt for the 06, My heart's in the group size race, I just hunt paper and steel so I'm going 308 cause I can't buy them all - direct orders from the wifey.

And i'm just a know-nothing internet troll who only has ever in his life shot a $200 .22LR, there it's said move on...not true but what the hey.

Just don't snipe my bids and we'll stay friends :) - just kidding and take care

If you actually want a long rifle, I'd say get a Swedish M96 Mauser. They're known for outstanding accuracy and have great ballistics for shooting at range. Also pretty much all ammo makers build rounds for them, so you can use modern cartridges in it.

If you're looking for something more modern and that can be easily scoped, I'd go with a Savage 10, or one of its derivatives, or a Remington 700. Both can be had in many variations and caliber to suit your wants. .308 is a good, readily available caliber that you can get for a decent price. If you want to shoot more for less, get a .223.

If your hunting is limited to deer and smaller get a .243 or some other 6mm. Very accurate and easy shootiing.

7mm-08, all around caliber, light recoil, flat shooter, a Stevens 200 maybe. I got one such animal and I love it and I got some really nice rifles in my safe.

If you don't reload, I'd suggest the .308 over the '06. But, luv my .243, and there ain't no flies on a 7mm08. :)

Odds are, for paper punching, ammo for a .308 is about as least-cost as you can find.

I don't own one, but the Mosin is .312 actually isn't it? Please correct me if I'm wrong?

If that's the case, I'd suggest .303 British (Enfield) :)

You know, a nice sporterized Enfield that way you can reload for both with the same bullet.

Get something that have guarantee to shoot, like TC, Weatherby or Tikka, 308 is fine will do all you need. I can also add Remington or Savage but you need to know what to do in case it is not a shooter. After modifying my SPS Varmit it shoots bugholes with Savage you can change barrels shoot different calibers...
