I like to try out a type of ammo in my rifle before I toss a whole lot of money into buying a supply of it. I am pretty sure that the Lake City stuff will work fine in my AR but I would still prefer to get a couple of loose boxes somewhere to try first. Another factor is cost. I would love to be able to order a bazillion rounds but the fact is that I don't have an extra $200 or so laying around to buy ammo with right now.
I got some of the Radway Green stuff locally and it shot pretty well out of my AR but the headstamp was from '90. The newest I have read about anyone getting is from '93. I would love to have a few thousand rounds of it for plinking but I want to get some good, recent production stuff for storage. Good as the Radway Green seems to be it is still about 15 years old on average.
I figure if I get some SS-109 and some as yet undetermined expanding/fragmenting ammo just to have around, I can just pick up a few boxes of FMJ locally when I want to shoot. At least until I can afford another big purchase.
As for finding someone to split a case with, I don't think that is going to happen. I am the only one I know who needs 5.56. Everyone else is stuck on 7.62x39. At least I can actually find ammo for mine.
Guess I'll have to hit gunbroker and see where that leads me.
Thanks.
