Hello Highroaders, especially Texans in the South of Austin/North of San Antonio area and around thereabouts.

I don't feel comfortable giving my precise location on the internet, but let's say I live a short distance north of Austin and my sister now lives in northwest San Antonio.

She's just moved, but has expressed an interest to me that she would like to try shooting a handgun sometime after she gets settled. I want to start her off right, and am wondering if someone can point me to a range, ideally one that offers a basic introduction and safety course. I'd really like to try to get her started by an impartial person who doesn't share my prejudices. But barring that, I can at least show her how to fire a handgun without the world ending.

Ideally this would be something that wouldn't take 8 hours, 4 maximum. She'll want to go mid morning or afternoon and be home in time to see her friends or whatever; I don't want this to be some all day thing that'll put her off. I am that committed but suspect she is not. I will have any safety equipment we might need for such a thing, or I will once I pick up another set of ears. And yes, I can furnish handguns for her and me both no problem unless you've some very strict requirements.

At any rate, I'd at least like a grocery list of locations/contact info if anyone knows of any, at the very least I'd like her to be able to pick up my Rossi and Ruger .22s and see that they don't kill people, they don't make loud noises, and they're a hell of a lot of fun. Ideally, a pay as you go type facility or one with a reasonably priced membership which allowed for a guest seems like what would work out best, because she may do this once and never want to do it again, or it might be six months before she can/wants to do it again. I'd like it to be closer to her than me, I can drive a couple hours if need be. She's not adverse to driving at all however, so if there's some place in the middle that'd be fine too.

Anyway, thanks for reading this overly long spiel, and I hope you're from South Austin/San Marcos/North San Antonio and can help.:D

Some suggestions...

Look at taking a Basic Pistol class through K.R.Training. Karl Rehn has a private range up in Lincoln, TX and also coordinates a network of other training operators. Highly recommended.

Also, Red's has ranges up in Pflugerville and down in Oakhill. They are some of the few local ranges that are around and I think they have some beginners classes.

see if their is a gander mountain, Carter's country around there, or even call collector's firearms, to see if they have a shop in one of your two cities.

Tom Schafer is one of Karl's instructors. I took my CHL with him and he struck me as a very good instructor. If she's never shot before starting her off with a private lesson might be a very good idea. Tom's range is in Caldwell county, so he's about the same distance to both of you.

Texas Facility

www.wetmoreshootingsports.com/ in northeast San Antonio offers NRA classes and CHL licensing courses. I did a transfer through them and the owner seemed like a real nice fellow. The range I use is The Bullet Hole Shooting Range in northwest San Antonio, 2715 Grosenbacher Rd, 210-679-6781. It's an outdoor range with pistol and rifle ranges. It's nothing too fancy or high-tech, but has everything necessary and the folks there are very friendly and helpful. They also offer training and CHL licensing classes. Costs are a one-time $3 sign up fee to get a Bullet Hole Range picture ID and range fees are $7.50 per visit. They provide your target and loaner earmuffs and eye protection if you don't have your own. You can shoot as long as you want, use pistol and/or rifle ranges and as many guns as you want. It's family owned and they really are good folks. I really enjoy the "down home" atmosphere out there.

Another for www.krtraining.com - Their basic pistol classes are great starting points as are their later AT sequence and guest instructors.

Penny Riggs (Karl's wife) runs a class for women IIRC.

Red's Indoor Range in Oak Hill is a great place to take her. They also "rent" guns they have in the case, which can give her exposure to all kinds of weapons. They even have an AR-16, semi-auto of course, that is available for rent.

Euclid,

For a facility closer to her than you try Dietz Public Shooting Range, 421 Range Road, New Braunfels(5 miles west of town on Hwy 46), 830/885-4662, open 10AM til dark, it's an outdoor facility, no instruction that I know of but a decent facility. I go about once a week and the pistol range is usually empty first thing in the AM. Shoot me an email if you have questions.

As an aside, I highly recommend you start newbies with a revolver, if possible, it makes a lot of sense in a number of ways for someone unfamiliar with handguns.

I second Dietz range also, but I don't think there is any instruction there. I go to Bracken range in San Antonio and it is OK, not great just OK. It is very close to my house so that is why I go there. They don't offer instruction there either, but there are plenty of fliers and business cards on the bulliten board of folks that conduct training on a regular basis.

Euclidean -

I also shoot at Dietz's range. It is about 5 miles northwest of New Braunfels on highway 46. I think he charges $10 for all day for all the guns you want to bring (it's $8 for NRA members). The only thing I tell folks to be aware of at Dietz's is to not step in the cow pies when walking downrange to the targets.:)

I am an NRA certified instructor and would be willing to meet you and your sister and give her some basic instruction in safety and marksmanship if you/she wish. PM/e-mail me if you want to follow up.

Jim

Dietz is a good place. I shoot there at times. Did have to stop for the goats once. Then you can eat bad for you food at the Hwy 46 Cafe (or something like that) restaurant - West of Dietz.

Sorry everyone, forgot I made the thread haha.

These are all good suggestions, I might just take her out to some place she can blow .22 caliber holes in paper first before trying to talk her into formal instruction.

Everything I have is either a .22, a 9mm, a .357 magnum, .38 Special, or .45 ACP, so the KR training looks pretty interesting since they'll rent you a variety of stuff for $15.

As for the revolver thing, I love revolvers and I like semiautos which emulate revolvers to some degree, but I'll get her whatever she wants to try. Some people are revolver people, some people are semiauto people.
