Mak is $289 in excellent condition vs the CZ82 $219 which will be in good condition. Thoughts?

I just got a CZ 82. I've never fired a true Mak, but I have to say, the CZ82 is a dream to shoot, dream to grip, dream to carry. It's a wonderful gun, and you will love it. A plus I see over the Mak is the beavertail. These things have a very snappy recoil, and a beavertail helps with slide bite.

Also, CZ82 is has a doublestack 12 round mag. Mak's are only 8 rounds.

At those prices why not buy one of each and decide which you like best. Then sell the other for what you paid for it.

I've had four or five Makarov PMs and no CZ82s. Having said that, if you're just looking at a range gun, I'd go with the CZ82. For me, it's a slightly more comfortable gun to shoot. The MakPM is a classic, but the CZ82 makes just as good a shooter.

It will be backup carry gun and summer carry. Does that change your thoughts?

Dove, pretty much summed up what I would've said. I recently bought one myself about a month ago and have to say I'm impressed! :) The real beauty of the 82 comes after you shoot it. Mine points & shoots like a laser!!

I've had no problem concealing mine under a flannel shirt. Also it's not quite warm enough here for them yet but I did check to see how well it conceals under a short sleeve, button down twill/canvas type shirt for summer and it hides very well there too. With that said the Mak will probably hide even better for the summer months being slimmer.

Check out this link if you want to see just how sweet these 82's can clean up with a re-blue and some wood grips.

Either way you can't go wrong with the 82 or the Mak and I'm really starting to like this 9x18 round!

I have both too. The CZ82 is a better gun with larger sights that are easier to use. The downside of the CZ82 is the grip being significantly wider than the Makarov. The other difference is on the safeties. On the Makarov the safety is also a decocker. So safety on means hammer down. The CZ 82 safety cannot be activated hammer down, but can be activated with the hammer cocked. So you can carry the CZ cocked and locked, but you still have to manually lower the hammer. Both guns have firing pin blocks so carrying safety off is no problem, except on the makarov you can accidentally flip it to safe which might be a problem if you wanted to carry safety off.

Both are fine milsurp pieces.

Other things to compare - the Makarov has basic black notch sights, while the CZ-82 has dot sights (with a slightly wider rear notch, which I find better for target acquisition).

The Bulgarian mak was - for me - a pleasant surprise in terms of build quality.
The CZ-82 was no surprise in that it was very high build quality. Both excellent.

You might find it a bit harder to get original milsurp mags for the Mak than for the CZ-82. At least that's been my experience.

You'll need to compare the grip ergonomics for yourself. Between the ergonomics, sweet trigger and dot sights, I give the CZ-82 the edge. For compactness and simplicity, the Mak has an edge.

I have both. Both are great guns. The CZ-82 is way better to shoot because of the better trigger and better sights. The Makarov is better to carry because it is thinner and not oddly shaped. I would like to carry my CZ-82 more, but I've yet to find a good holster. Both are dead-nuts reliable. If your purpose is to carry as a BUG, I recommend the Mak. --Stork

I owned and carried a russian mak several years ago. It was a cheap, reliable, accurate pistol but a bit heavy for its size (~25oz IIRC). It carried nice IWB since it was thin.

I have shooting buddy that has a CZ-82. The CZ is a sweet pistol. For a relatively compact pistol its surprisingly accurate. It's a nice size and its trigger is way better than my Mak's. I would rather have 12+1 vs 8+1 if push came to shove. I would buy the CZ and spend my extra $70 on extra mags or ammo!

The CZ has better than double the parts in the firing mechanism as the Mak. Which means two thing, twice as much to go wrong and harder to tear and and especially reassemble.

I have five Makarovs. Two Russian, Two Bulgarian, and One E.G. I have not yet picked up a CZ-82 but probably will soon to go along with my CZ-75's. You can't go wrong between these two, but remember, Makarovs are no longer being made by anyone. There is a finite supply, and we all know what happens when the supply dries up.

I would get the Bulgie Mak and here is why:

Accuracy and reliablility are a given for both, but the Mak has fewer parts and is overall a simpler design.

The Mak is easier to conceal and carry due to its slimness.

With the addition of a Pearce grip, the Mak becomes a very easy gun to shoot well with little felt recoil. This does add a bit of width though, but it can easily be removed for carry.

Between those I think I'd get the CZ because I like the Czech guns in general and it's cheaper. Gander Mountain was running a sale on Polish P64 Radoms and I got one Saturday. It's more compact than the Mak, but only holds 6 rounds in the mag. It's shorter in both length and especially height. It's small enough to call a pocket gun. AND, the danged thing is accurate! They had it listed in the flyer for 259, but I got it for 199 plus tax. :D It shoots great and I'm real happy with it. My SIL has a Russian Mak and it's qute the good shooter, too. I just think, your choices here, the CZ would be my pick 'cause I like CZs. And, heck, it IS cheaper.

I have the CZ82, three CZ83 and 16 Makarovs.

They are both good guns.

The CZ magazine release is over engineered and sometimes becomes hard to push.

Overall I favor the Makarov by just a little bit.

rellascout, if you're point-shooting I don't think it's going to matter much. I think both of them are consistently accurate guns, but it's easier to pick up the sights on the CZ82. I don't know what the weather is like where you are, but here in Arkansas I like something *slim* to carry in the summer to go along with my normal wardrobe. The MakPM will be easier to conceal and find holsters for.

Be prepared to adjust/file the sights on the MakPM if you don't like a 6 o'clock hold; it's designed to have a high POI relative to POA. I don't know if the CZ82 is the same way.

When the MakPMs were selling for $130-150 each and lots of spare parts were available, I think they were one of the best deals going. Now, not so much.

Mine came from SOG.....My dealer charged me $225 plus tax.....Came with 2 mags, holster, mag holster, plus cleaning rod and that price included the hand pick fee.

I think he bought 3 at the same time so he received a discounted price. He says all 3 were hand picks and this was the nicest of the 3...He says he wasn't as pleased with the other 2 being hand picks. My buddy bought one the others off him and it's not as nice as this one. I would have bought from AIM but they were sold out then. I believe AIM is more accurate on the grading and my dealer uses both distributors and confirmed that to be true.

The only thing I've done to this one is bead blast the grips to take the cheesy high gloss shine off them. I'm happy with the way that turned out. I also worked on the mag release mechanism a bit (file/polish) and have it working much better now......Couldn't ask for a nicer outfit for $225 :D

I have owned both, the only advantage the Mak has is smaller size if you plan on concealed carrying it, other then that get teh cz.
