Hey guys I'm looking to buy a milsurp rifle that is not of the ordinary. Do you guy's have any suggestions? Bolt actions or semi autos it really doesn't bother me too much.

Looking to spend around 300 and there's a show this weekend near me. Anything I need to look for?

I'm more of a soviet rifle kinda guy but I hear the Swiss K31 is hella fun and super accurate. Depending on condition it may be just out of your $300. What do you already have???

Well generally you find a rifle, offer money, dicker a little bit and part ways or part money

Find a gun, buy it, really doesn't get much easier than that, just know what the going prices are before you go out and buy, check gun broker, look at SOLD items, and try to find out why the sold, and realize most of those prices are on the HIGH end.

I have a few Mosins, I have an SKS and a few AKs, I love some Soviet Block guns it just seems I have them all. What are the odds of finding a Rasheed?

Milsurp

May I ask what your goals are with a milsurp?

Do you want something that is a shooter or a collectable piece?

$300 probably puts you on the upper edge of a decent shooter and depending on the rifle, may even be desirable as a collectable.

I tend to lean towards Mausers (Swedish, German, South American) and No.4 Enfields. A decent Swede M96 or M38 may fit your needs, as they usually are in better condition that most run of the mill Mausers.

It's really about what you decide you want. Look, read, ask questions...

Good Luck!

I picked up a Hakim for around $70 at a flea market, given it didn't have a magazine and it had been spray painted black. I did some research, and found out that it was smaller and 7.62x39 and it's like an SKS just a little different.

Given that is there any milsurps other than a Chilean Mauser in 7.62 NATO?

My goals with the milsurp will be making it a scout rifle but that's the tentative plan, all I have been seeing in my area is people either sportorizing their Mosins or simply putting a scope mount on it and an ATI stock. I'd like to make a scout rifle that is different from the other ones I've seen, if that makes any sense.

At the same time I don't want to bastardize a beautiful Mauser or K-31, so I'd like to get something like an Enfield jungle carbine or a Spanish Mauser converted to .308.

You could find a Yugo M48 and make a psuedo scout rifle out of it without any permanent modification to the rifle. Mine is an excellent shooter that is accurate and powerful enough to kill just about any game in North America if I wanted it to.

VZ-58, though you will have to shell out a little bit more, even for the century models.

Yugo refurbished Mausers are also a good buy, 54r is cheap and plentiful

Take a cleaning rod and a bunch of patches.

Some sellers who have dirty bores either don't want such guns to sell, or they think that potential buyers don't care about the bore's condition.

If a so-called buyer doesn't want a bore to be cleaned at he show, can you trust him/her regarding the gun's condition, safety and whether he/she is just a liar?

The Hakim is 8mm while the Rasheed is 7.62x39. Who $70 for a Hakim that was great if it works. Guy on GB sells a 20 and 25 round mag for it that makes range time a blast.

The Styer 95 is fun to shoot.

If you want something a little different try a CZ52 rifle in 7.62x45. Loads of fun. Ammo is around and not too expensive yet. I have a few of these rifles and a custom wood stock for one that I need to get working on.

I have had some different Mosins, a Finn M-27, as well as an M-38. Then I got a K-31. I am about to buy another K-31. An amazing shooter. Very fun to shoot, and really not too expensive to feed, as the GP11 ammo can be found, and is very good stuff (also non-corrosive). The Swiss took great care of the metal on these rifles, and the bores are almost always in great shape.

I picked up a nice FR-8 Spanish Mauser and love it. Everyone that shoots it agrees. Short, loud, not much recoil. Nice handling little rifle.

I ended up with a M44 it's a beater I got it for around $100. I think I'm going to strip it and add a dark mahogany stain maybe install a comb. It's a Hungarian so there isn't much collectors value right?

K31. It'll push your price limit, but the Swiss straight pulls remain some of the finest rifles ever issued.

After that the FR8 is very good.

Then the fun ones start running to serious money :(

Another vote for a K31. Difficult to beat in the accuracy department especially with a diopter.

A ZFK55 i.e. the sniper version of the K31 is excellent as well. And if you want to splurge and can find one, an STGW 57 is a great option. Possibly the most accurate semi-auto milsurp ever made.

yup, I just bought a Spanish FR-8 in 7.62 NATO. Got it for a really good price from a member of the club I belong to.

Another vote for the K31...only thing you need to be aware of is the caliber. Only one or two companies make 7.5 Swiss, but GP11 surplus ammo is available and decent priced. If you reload, you'll want to get Redding dies.

My 1940 K31 is an absolute tack driver. Most K31s will look like the stock was used to drive tent pegs or was chewed on by an angry beaver...but the mechanical bits are usually in great shape.
