Hey guys,

I purchased a Ruger 10/22 a few years ago, and from then on I had been focusing on building my pistol collection. Now it's that time again, and I'm feeling the need to add another rifle to my arsenal :D

I am really thinking about getting something in .308, but I can be convinced otherwise. I absolutely love the look of the M1A, but it is a little pricey (I'm still in college, so not a lot of extra cash to play with). To be honest, if I could get anything I'd go get an MR762 (civilian HK417) but they are $4000 plus :banghead:

I have also thought about getting a Savage Arms varmint rifle, or an AR-15. I know, I know, I just named 4 completely different rifle styles.

I will be doing mostly target shooting, but I would love to have something I could take out hunting if I got an invite.

So, what is a reasonably good rifle that I can get for $1200 or less that would be a good second rifle to have?

This will let you shoot service rifle and its a flat top upper, you can add a scope at some time. BUT the iron sights are good out to 800yds as is.

Truthfully, with the sheer range of the guns you appear to like, there is no one here but you who can help you pick something you want.

First I need to know - do you own a shotgun? If not, buy a shotgun.

If you have one, for mostly target shooting/Varmint-style rifle, I'd look at the Savage 12 FV. If that's too much, the Savage-Stevens 200. (no accutrigger, lighter barrel) Huge bang for the buck.

I'd even consider a 200 in .308 if that's what I wanted for target and medium-game sized hunting. The stock is cheap, but they're tack-drivers.

I agree on the savage with some fair glass. but lets talk about your hunting situation. don't wait for an invitation just go by yourself and people will hound you to take them. learning to hunt at a higher level is always less embarrassing by yourself. plus you get to focus on the hunt a little better. any rifle you want will foot the bill. just get out and do it.. you can make it cheep just sleep in the truck.

The first real gun I ever owned was shotgun. I used the heck out of it for many years. Somewhere along the line we all got involved in varmint hunting and that was my first centerfire rifle. I bought a varmint rifle but that never slowed me down. It's been deer hunting and even bear hunting. Sure it's heavier than a sporter but I never let that stop me.

But I've noticed a disturbing trend in varmint rifles lately. When I bought my first I had caliber choices of .222, .223, .22-250, .243, 6mm Rem, .25-06, 7mm08 and .308. Looking now about all you can find is .223, .22-250 and .308. What happened to all the choices?

You can't go wrong with a bolt action rifle.

If it was me looking today, I would like to try out a Remington Model 700 bolt action in .308. There has been some talk of trigger problems on some, but Remington says they cannot duplicate the problem themselves.

Nowadays, .223 and .308 are usually a lot cheaper due to them being military calibers.

In the past I've had a .223 single shot bull barrel varmint rifle I loved. Cheaper caliber to shoot than most.

Okay, I just went through the "need a new rifle now" phase :)
I went with a new AR-15 because I wanted a fun plinking gun that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg to feed.....although with how much fun it will be.....that might still be the case ;)

If you want a fun bolt action gun, the Remington 700 SPS Tactical (.308 or .223) looks very appealing to me and could very well be my next rifle. It can be had for about $600 which leaves you with ~$600 to get some nice glass
