As other's have mentioned, I'd take a good look at the FNAR. I bought a heavy barrel one 6 months back and really like it. I'm going to use it part of deer season this year. Mags are expensive though $55+
Good news is we broke the all-time record snowfall. Bad news is there was no way I was going to brave the range in the weather that hit Saturday. But I did get out to a few shops to stock up on sample 7.62 for load testing. I also found a shop with an old E2 stock way way back in the back room. Lord knows how long it had been there. I think it's original, since it has an SN and a cutout for da switch. I put a few light coast of BLO on it to protect it. I think they were supposed to be stained so I may go back and do that at some point, but I like the look of it. Also I've noticed it balances much better with a LER scope than the standard Scout stock Springfield uses. The stock puts your eye at the right level for a scope, too, which oddly the Springfield stock doesn't do. Finding a buttplate for the E2 is very difficult so I'm going to do some custom fitting on an old Garand buttplate.
One initial observation on the M1a--it's heavy but it breaks down very quickly and packs up almost as easily as the AR-15 carbine. With a folding rear stock it would require only slightly more space to stow than the AR when broken down.
