I've been looking at M1As for about 2 years. That $1200-$1500 price tag just kept me away. Now they're going for about twice that.

I'm not doing $2000+ for a Scout M1A.

So should I just get something like a Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle or wait (and hope) that M1A prices come back down?

i just bought a ruger scout rifle and i really like it but i have not had a chance to shoot it yet. but as for your question if you really want an m1a i think you would be better off saving the money and getting what you really want.

i say this for 2 reasons, #1 when you do find what you want you will already have the money, #2 the m1a will make you happier in the end, meaning no buyers remorse. if you buy the ruger and find you dont like it then you sell it you may or may not get all your money back then you have to come up with the money to buy that m1a you just found when you already had the money and this could cause you to miss the sale.of course if you can afford both disregard this whole post!!!!

If you want a .308 to shoot, and must have one RIGHT NOW, then yeah, a bolt action may be easier to get your hands on, and certainly will be cheaper. If what you want is an M1A because you must have an M1A, then you should save up and get one.

I shot a couple of M1A rifles, and a couple of AR10-types, and really started wanting one with a nice scope for hitting targets a good distance away. When I figured out how much I would save by putting the scope on a bolt action, and how much lighter the rifle would be for actually carrying it around, I bought a bolt action. I wanted it for hitting distant targets accurately, and I realized that the action type didn't really matter that much to me. I'm very happy with my choice, but if you are lusting after the M1A, you might not want to compromise.

The Ruger scout rifle will probably hold it's value up well if you wanted to sell/trade it once semi-auto prices level off (whenever that will be).

Bolt actions are a lot of fun. You could do far worse than own the Ruger Scout. I'd suggest looking at a 30-30 lever action. I enjoy them even more than a bolt action. Deer won't know the difference.

M1A prices aren't coming down. You're going to have to shell out $1200 or more for one, whether you wait, or buy one now.

M1A vs Ruger scout seems to me like the battle of overpriced rifles. If your #1 priority is to shoot a 30 caliber bullet there are cheaper options for both automatics and bolt actions. What is making you look at those over more reasonably priced rifles?

The prices would come down if the dollar was not losing its value every day. It used to be called inflation and we could see it and plan for it. Now polititians changed the name and average joe does not realize the extent of what is occuring. Commodities and anything that has long term value cost more and more of the worthless dollars. With panic buying and fiat currency it is tough to get prices back down even when the panic is over.

I had an M1A on my shopping list for years but finally took it off. With the price of .308 ammo, I no longer have a desire to plink the round that fast, for that much money. I'll leave that to my .22 or .223. For a .308, each shot is more important.

Get a nice bolt.

if the m1a is what you really want, wait for prices to come down (they assuredly will after the panic wears off). lots of folks buy what they don't really want, and end up selling same in later months. be patient unless you just have to have a 308 at this point in time. good things come to those who wait.

At this point I'm not doing $2000-$2500 for an M1A...if that proves to be their new normal price after 6-12 months, then perhaps ill recognize that as reality and get one.

If you have your heart set on the M1A, then wait. I estimate 6 months before you see movement downward in price. With that said, I believe that you'll never see the same prices that you did just a month ago. Expect to pay $1600-$1700 for a basic model in the future. Don't let the "ban" panic fool you, unless you live in California. In that state, the Democrats have super-majorities and there are some very active anti-gun lawmakers. I live in the Golden State and am very concerned there will be a total ban effected on ALL center-fire semi-auto rifles.
