So I'm looking to purchase a S&W 627 V-comp: http://tinyurl.com/cb8fm6j. It's on the 'accepted list' here in CA and either the two-tone (per the URL) or the earlier all-stainless model is acceptable. Both are 8 shot models which is darn good capacity for a magnum revolver. I own its big brother (the 629 V-comp) and it's a seriously wonderful piece of machinery. Far better than my skills can make use of without a lot more practice.
Couple of things:
Does anyone have any experience or reviews to share with it. I've heard good things and am drawn to the design but would like to learn more. I'd use it for holes in paper, HD and rarely a long hike in the woods. Never to carry daily or leave in the car.
And does anyone know of where I can find one to buy? There is one on GB well over list, and I'm hoping to pay no more than list and preferably less. Some GB listings cite 'no shipping to CA' which is a bummer for me and really pis#$s me off too.
Help please,
Thx,
B

I got the early version all stainless with out the lock came in the aluminum case with the compensator and straight barrel cap.

With out a doubt my favorite gun to shoot and my last to sell, way more accurate than I am. Got 2 other 8 shots and like them all a 627 pro 4" and the 327 TR8 I really like the 8 shots as it is a short cycle to the next cylinder. Good luck finding the all stainless prelocks they are very rare and very expensive. I would think the two tones are just as good but never seen or shot one.

Thanks very much. I did see one (stainless model) for sale a month back but was too early in my thinking cycle to go for it. Bad thinking I guess.
But you helped confirm what I've read and thought based on my big brother version of it. The PC folks, despite the added price, really do improve the workings and appearance of their product.
An alternative that I've been considering, and the reason I was too slow to react on the stainless model, is a Dan Wesson 'set' chambered for .357 mag/special. The thought of a set of barrels to configure based on need is pretty interesting. Given the choice, I'd likely get the S&W, but I'm keeping my eye on both.
Any word on the DW's?
Thx,
B

Personally I never liked the DW's but a lot of guys do, I am a lefty so opening the cylinder is very user unfriendly. They seem to have a lot of small parts in the lockwork and I never felt like they had a decent action. Just my humble opinion. A lot of guys swear by them!! I would give 30 DW's for a prelock V-comp.

Dan Wesson, love their product. I just bought another, Model 15-2V, 8" and 2" barrels, door knob wrench and tools. The price, $425.00. I already have a Model 741, 8" and 6" barrels, along with a Model 15-2VH, 8" and 6" barrels and tools.

If I can find a 22 Mag, I would be in business.

They really show off at the range.

Have a 627 (neo-UDR) and liked it a lot but kinda heavy to carry. (Have some physical limitations.) Then got a 327SC which solved the weight problem but I couldn't shoot it as accurately. I did love the 8 shot capability of these.

I had a 5" barrel 686 that I liked for Bullseye and other target uses. Decided to sell the 686 to fund an 8 shot target revolver that would make use of my 5-Star speedloaders and loading blocks.

Really wanted a TRR-8 but couldn't find one where I looked. Got on several gun store wait lists with no progress. Found a used pristine 627 V-comp (gun only) with the comp and bought it. Made the mistake of shooting some cast bullets and got the comp very leaded up. Dug out most of the lead with a lot of elbow grease. Put the V-comp up for consignment sale at a loss from my purchase price. I then discovered from another forum that it originally came with a barrel cap as well as a comp. Called S&W and ordered the barrel cap. The V-comp hadn't sold yet so I pulled the revolver off consignment sale. Now I'm relatively satisfied with the V-comp and barrel cap.

If you're in Northern CA, I have a friend in Marin who wants to sell his in a FTF transaction (he doesn't want to ship)

Drop me a PM if you are interested and I'll put you in touch with him
