Looking to buy an AK

Ask around to see if anyone has a used WASR for sale and buy one off someone that can verify there aren't any issues with it. That's how I got mine. The UF is definitely the way to go too. I'd also go with 7.62.x39 just because it seems more authentic to me. Wood furniture for the very same reason. I like them authentic.

No, No he did not. His employer did. The money comes from payroll taxes that are payed not by employees but by employers
He stll paid for it with his work, doesnt matter if that money ever touched his hands, would his employer ever have paid if he hadn't worked for him?
Ussally an employer pay employees less because they have to pay for unemployment, it would have been his money.

Sorry I am way off topic.

Quite possibly yes. Further it is money taken form their profits not his. He did not pay for it through his work (please tell me you don't believe in some bunk Marxist labor theory of value nonsense that is the theory I can see supporting your assertion but it is a theory that is simply wrong) and I do not see how you can argue that. He was paid the wages his work commanded. The taxes come out of a company's profits. Much more goes into those profits than the labor of an employee.

I really am trying to keep from going back and forth on this because this is not a political forum but I am far from a Marxist really when it comes to the economy i'm more of a libertarian. I don't think companies should have to pay for unemployment, but if they are its because you are making them a profit and they are taking it out of you're wages.

When I was 23 I knew a lot less about the way businesses worked too. They are not taking it out of your wages because you would work for that wage anyway. If they suddenly didn't have to pay payroll taxes there is no indication that they would pay anyone more money, particularly right now when unemployment is scarce and it would be easy for many employers to find other people who would be more than happy to work for that wage. My family owns various companies. If there were no taxes we would not pay guys more to drive their trucks (or whatever else the various jobs are), they are already being paid a salary that is above the market for that area. We would keep the extra money as additional profit or more likely adjust prices down to be more competitive in the market or remain competitive in response to someone else likely doing the same thing. Currently the money comes out of the owners (and ultimately the consumer's) pockets.

Not necessarily liking where this is going, I think I've settled to 7.62x39. I can still be swayed. I clean my guns immediately after each outing, so corrosive ammunition isn't quite an issue. Besides, it's an AK, they don't need to be cleaned,

Well, I've decided on 5.45x39, and I think I'm going to go with one from Atlantic firearms. They have a deal for $479 that comes with a pair of mags, and have a 4 pack mag deal for 60 bucks

With the impending reversal in the Dow, the last thing I would be doing is spending money on a firearm.
But hey, its kinda your money to blow, do say you weren't warned.

Cost- My budget is 650.

Keep saving so that your options are not limited to a century arms product.

you can go to Kvar right now and get a SGL20-61 for $649. Had you been here about 2 months ago you could have picked one up for $499 when they had their blowout clearance sale. Either way it is still the best thing your going to get in your price range.

Getting a cheaper WASR or Yugo is not always a good idea. The SGL series of rifles at K-var are pretty much the best there is in the AK market, and your not having to deal with used surplus part guns like WASRs/yugos. Remember the guns from century arms are built on used surplus parts, they are not new rifles...so why pay for a worn out used rifle when a new one of much higher quality is only slightly more expensive.

I really like the Rough Rider rifle and it gets alot of great reviews there's an occasional lemon but it happens when your turning out alot of rifles and don't hesitate to buy from Atlantic Firearms their customer service is great. I may pick one of these up too here in the near future I get really tempted to everytime I look at one.

agreed, the roughrider should be ok to go. combined with decent mags and cheap ammo... I saw go for it. You had better enjoy cleaning rifles though....corrosive ammo is a pain in the ass.

I just got my lancaster rough rider around 2 weeks ago. Mine has a problem with the dust cover not fitting correctly - it popped out under recoil, and now pops off even from just operating the bolt.

I bought mine from atlantic firearms, and must say that they are dedicated to providing excellent service; blaine got involved directly in the RMA process for my rifle and got me directly in touch with Chet over at Lancaster. The rifle is being picked up (at lancaster's expense) today and should be repaired or replaced in about a week. I made a youtube video showing the problem, and got a comment post from a user who said their rifle had the same problem, but that the entire rifle was replaced when the issue was found. Overall, I'd be willing to give lancaster another try, so long as the problem is addressed when my rifle returns. The price to value ratio is good.

The rifle is reliable from a functionality perspective, well finished, and the mags were in good shape. I also got the 4 mag w/ pouch deal. You might also consider that 45 round ak74 mags are on sale for ~40$ each at midwayUSA right now too. I picked up 2 - since the rifle came with 2 and a pouch, so I can have 1 45rnd mag in rifle, another in pouch, and the remaining empty pouch pocket filled with the 30 round paper bricks of ammo, then the 2 30rnd mags that came w/ rifle in the remaining 2 pockets. Then, of course, another 4 mag pouch w/ 30 round mags. Pretty good loadout for SHTF - and i also picked up some stripper clips from KVAR -(15 rounds per, I picked up 60 stripper clips) that make loading the mags pretty easy. They also have the 45rnd mags on sale for ~40$ each - with midway's C&R FFL '03 discount, midway's are ~37.99 where kvar's are 39.99 each. There's something pretty attractive about having 4 mags contain 180 rounds. 2 4 mag pouches on your belt of the 45rnd mags, and you'd be carrying 360 rounds IN mags, plus whatever you want to carry on stripper clips. Suddenly I can see why the 5.45x39 is so attractive compared to the 7.62x39 - much less the old 7.62x54R!

The current russian surplus 5.45x39 is pretty filthy, and having a gas tube setup really makes cleaning the '74 a PITA. The mosin is a walk in the park, comparitively.

Lol. I'm prepared for whatever I need to do with the gun. I know how to clean em, I know how to disassemble them... without ever touching one in my life. Yes, this will be my first AK.

Not interested in unconverted Saiga's. Not to mention, that scope isn't worth it. I had a similar scope on a .243 Winchester and it busted after 60 rounds... I just want a nice looking AK.
