I just got my lancaster rough rider around 2 weeks ago. Mine has a problem with the dust cover not fitting correctly - it popped out under recoil, and now pops off even from just operating the bolt.
I bought mine from atlantic firearms, and must say that they are dedicated to providing excellent service; blaine got involved directly in the RMA process for my rifle and got me directly in touch with Chet over at Lancaster. The rifle is being picked up (at lancaster's expense) today and should be repaired or replaced in about a week. I made a youtube video showing the problem, and got a comment post from a user who said their rifle had the same problem, but that the entire rifle was replaced when the issue was found. Overall, I'd be willing to give lancaster another try, so long as the problem is addressed when my rifle returns. The price to value ratio is good.
The rifle is reliable from a functionality perspective, well finished, and the mags were in good shape. I also got the 4 mag w/ pouch deal. You might also consider that 45 round ak74 mags are on sale for ~40$ each at midwayUSA right now too. I picked up 2 - since the rifle came with 2 and a pouch, so I can have 1 45rnd mag in rifle, another in pouch, and the remaining empty pouch pocket filled with the 30 round paper bricks of ammo, then the 2 30rnd mags that came w/ rifle in the remaining 2 pockets. Then, of course, another 4 mag pouch w/ 30 round mags. Pretty good loadout for SHTF - and i also picked up some stripper clips from KVAR -(15 rounds per, I picked up 60 stripper clips) that make loading the mags pretty easy. They also have the 45rnd mags on sale for ~40$ each - with midway's C&R FFL '03 discount, midway's are ~37.99 where kvar's are 39.99 each. There's something pretty attractive about having 4 mags contain 180 rounds. 2 4 mag pouches on your belt of the 45rnd mags, and you'd be carrying 360 rounds IN mags, plus whatever you want to carry on stripper clips. Suddenly I can see why the 5.45x39 is so attractive compared to the 7.62x39 - much less the old 7.62x54R!
The current russian surplus 5.45x39 is pretty filthy, and having a gas tube setup really makes cleaning the '74 a PITA. The mosin is a walk in the park, comparitively.
