Looking to get an inexpensive truck handgun.

I can concealed carry, but I don't at work. I leave my gun in the truck, so I want a gun (other than my Sig) to keep in the truck while I'm at work.

I've thought through this several ways over the past few years. I keep a pistol in each of my 3 vehicles, locked in the tunk in one of those steel cable-tied boxes. The truck box is under the seat, until I find something better.
for me, it has to be
1 double action, preferable DA/SA
2 Hicap
3 9mm preferred
4 Under $300
5 Pocketable for CCW

So far only the Bersa and KT P11 come close at new price. but I've bought two Stoeger cougars LNIB for $310 each, and I like those but they are a bit larger for #5. I've only had Bersa 380s, and did not like the trigger on them. No experience with Bersa 9mm.
At new price, it's got to be Keltec P11, with 12- and 15-rnd mags. Proven, reliable pistol.
Right now the 3 vehicles have a Keltec P11, a Keltec P3AT, and TBD (in the shop)

My vote is Keltec P11

ColtraneM3:

Great point about the greater similarity in grip to the XD! I have had 3 XDs, and they have been tremendous handguns! Accurate, reliable, and they were priced right.

Good redirect, ColtraneM3! Kudos!

Totally off the wall here.

Not really a handgun - will not fit in the console. But a friend has a Kel-tec folding rifle, that fits in an small satchel, like you take in a meeting. It comes in 9mm or 40. Uses Glock mags which can be up to what 25+ rounds - not into Glock, so do not know. But he has 4 - 25 round mags, gun was $300 or so and has a lot more freeway firepower.

He laughs and says it shoots fine. So no need to bash me, clearly the idea is "out - there", but 100 rounds on hand and a 16" barrel, that folds to 16"

Go withe Ruger P95; it's inexpensive and well-rated by independent reviewers. Smith & Wesson has a $50.00 rebate on the Stigma (oops! Sigma) which should bring it down to $300.00 or below. Either of these gives you a full-size pistol.

The last such gun I bought was a boat gun to take fishing in the swamps/lakes here in SC: a S&W M10 with a worn finish (carried in a gravel-lined holster, apparently) but with perfect innards I picked up on Auction Arms for $150 plus shipping etc, total ~$185. I love it, wouldn't part with it. J&G is selling DAO M15s with spur triggers for $220 that would be a good bet; ruminate on the concept...

Many quality guns can be had for cheap, if they exhibit a lot of finish wear. For a truck gun, I would find the best, ugliest, most holster worn handgun and buy it.

Don't own one but a Smith & Wesson Sigma in .40 sounds like it would feel this role. Right now Budsgunshop.com has them for $299 with $50 mail in rebate (ends April 1st). I would also recommend a Hi-Point in .40 which Buds has for $211 with a laser or $160 with out a laser. I live fifteen minutes from Buds main store and they have great customer service.

I've just posted this in another thread but I would consider a S&W Sigma or a Taurus 24/7.

You can get the Sigma for $299 shipped with a $50 mail in rebate or the 24/7 for $363 shipped.

I think the 24/7 is a better pistol but for a truck gun it's hard to beat a $250 Sigma.

Looks like tac. gunner beat me to it but I own a Sigma and it has been a good pistol for the money. I spent maybe a half hour doing a trigger job and it's not bad at all.

I also live pretty close to Buds (Louisville) and have been to their store in Lexington. I've never needed their customer service so I can't comment on that but they usually do have pretty good prices so I link to them probably more than any other dealer on here and use their prices to barter prices with the local shops.

9mm used Glock around $300's. 45ACP used RIA around $300 as well. And a good safe. Because as much as you think it is only a truck gun, it still needs to be reliable. So you still have to get it out from the truck from time to time to clean/lube it and practice with it so that when SHTF you have a ready weapon. That's my take, other's will surely disagree and so be it.

Stoeger Cougar in .40S&W. Fits your criteria perfectly. Its identical to a Beretta 8000, Stoeger bought all the CnC machinery from Beretta and shipped it to Turkey. Rotating bolt design, so its extremely accurate. 11-round mag from the factory. Takes Beretta 96 magazines (12-20 rounders) modified with 2 minutes and a file. They are dimensionally identical, but the notch is approx 1/8" lower.

Approx. 1k rounds through my 9mm Cougar without a single malf. using both factory supplied magazines (stamped Beretta :D) and modified USGI M9 magazines.

EDIT: I see they just added a .45 model to the lineup, if that floats your boat.
