Have been looking into making a bulk buy of .223/5.56. Of these 2 brands which would you buy????
My AR is chambered for 5.56 so either will work.

Have narrowed my search down to:

Federal XM193 5.56mm 55grain FMJ ($284.50 per 1000)

or

PMC Bronze. .223 55grain FMJ ($299.50 per 1000)

either will be fine if you are just using them for plinking. they are fmj so i dont see much of a difference. i would go for the cheaper one, but does that include shipping? and if you dont mind where did you find the xm193 for that price?

I bought 1k of the PMC Bronze a few years ago, didn't like it. Shot about half and traded the rest. My junk likes xm193. .30+/- a round seems to be the going price.

1,000rd case (50 boxes): $294.50ea ($5.89/box)
3,000rds or more only: $289.50 per thousand!

20rd box: $5.99ea
10+ boxes: $5.89ea

Have shot a bunch of this stuff with good results from Aimsurplus.

Consider that much of this 5.56/.223 ammunition now hitting the market at reduced prices has "penetrator" bullets, and will ruin good quality steel targets. If you are blasting away at scrap metal or paper, fine. Some ranges don't allow it's use, and some of the better schools I suspect won't either.

Yes the green tip will cut chains and knock other targets out of the game. Is OK for paper but it will mess up other type targets. A friend of mine did not think it would hurt his 3/4" scrap pot metal painted targets.....wrong.

Calm down. XM193 is surplus M193 ball, which is plain 55gr FMJ. M855 is the steel core stuff, and Sky spelled that out clearly in his post.

Calm down? I wasn't that excited.
Granted, Sky did note that correctly, and that is to his credit.
After hosting a few local matches using my own steel, I found it necessary to carefully inspect participant ammunition prior to shooting. Good quality steel is expensive, so it pays to check. Often shooters order based on price and name alone without regard to researching the projectile itself.
