Looks like CZ is fazing out the 550 in favor of the 557

The 550 American has been discontinued. The Varmint models in .22-250 have been discontinued. The only "varmint" models you can get now are a "Tacticool" synthetic stocked .308 and a Walnut stocked .308. I don't really consider .308 to be Varmint round.

I a not completely enamored with CRF, so the push feed aspect of the 557 doesn't bother me, but from the pictures I have seen of them, the stocks look much more plain than the 550 stocks, and they only come in 20" barrels. A .270 or a .30-06 in a 20" barrel seems like a complete waste. Why not give 22" or 24" barrels for them?

I'd always wanted a nice walnut stocked 6.5x55 Swede....when Beretta stopped importing the Tikka in 6.5x55, I started looking at the 550. Now the 557 is offered in 6.5x55, but I will have to consider that 20" barrel. I had also considered the Ruger 77 in 6.5 Creedmoor, seems the standard Walnut in 6.5 Creedmoor has been discontinued....sigh. Apparently gun makers think Americans don't care about the 6.5 calibers. I see the Thompson Center Venture comes in 6.5x55 now, but T/C has discontinued their wood stocked Icon.

Hopefully they will keep the 550 alive as a premium offering, while selling the 557 to the budget minded crowd.

They still have the Safari 550s and the Lux and the Mannlicher and a few Kevlar stocked versions...but the normal "American" which I would think would be their best seller is gone.

The only walnut stocked 550s left are the heavy barreled .308 and the $1400 Ultimate hunter, which only comes in .300 Win Mag.

I got a CZ550 FS in 6.5x55 last month. Since it's for hunting in less than 200 yards, 20" barrel doesn't bother me. Took it out first time last week. After sighted in the rifle, I got 6 shots (PPU 139gr sp) in 1.5" from 50 yard, open sight with front sandbag. I'm very happy with the rifle.

And historically we don't...

Except for a small set of fanatics we have this tendency as a group to jump from 6mm (.243) to various 7mm offerings and ignore the 6.5s.

Even with the latest resurgence in popularity/offerings, sales of rifles in the various 6.5 cartridges haven't exactly been overwhelming.

557 could be THE PERFECT GUN for me.

I will have a 557 in 6.5. The deer that I take will never know that the 120 bullet that just took their lungs out was going 2500 fps instead of 2600.
