Loose rear hand guard on M1

You can try reshaping the clip. It needs to follow the hand guard profile closely, and the end MIGHT be bendable slightly.
The clip is fairly hard, so any major bending is likely to break it.
Or, you can just buy a new clip.

It is possible that the rear HG clip is installed backwards.
I accidentally put one on the wrong way a few weeks back and experienced the same thing you are. Could not figure out why one side would not engage the groove until I took the rifle apart again and saw that I'd botched the clip install.

Take your handguard clip pliers that you're going to get from Brownell's and use the notched tips to spread the ends of the clip apart. Once the ends are spread, turn the left side of the guard down until you can slide the guard forward out of the clip. Installation is in the reverse of removal. Even a monkey could do it.
Be advised that if you don't have the pliers, clip removal can be very difficult and you risk cracking the handguard.

There is ANOTHER WAY to take off and install handguard clips without hurting the handguard:
Tools needed: 18 ga. soft iron wire (like used for safety wiring bolts), bench vise, and vise-grip pliers
Procedure:
1. Thread a 12" piece of the iron wire through each holes in the handguard clip. Twist the end of the wire around itself so it won't slip out of the hole in the clip.
2. Clamp the loose end of one wire in the bench vise
3. Attach the vise-grip pliers to the end of the other wire
4. Pull on the vise-grips to spread the clip, and while holding the clip spread, "roll" the handguard out of the clip
5. Reverse process to reinstall
I actually prefer this method to the special handguard pliers, as there is no way to "slip" with this method, as you can do so with the handguard pliers.
