About a year and a half ago I bought a Taurus PT1911 at a BassPro in Nashville. Blue finish, no light rail. Lately something disturbing has happened; If I fire more than about two magazines through it, the ambidextrous thumb safety starts to separate and come out of each side of the frame. I can quick fix it by applying pressure with a padded pair of pliers, but I need a better fix. Is there anything I can do short of getting another thumb safety, or is there a way to fix this one? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Call Taurus Customer Service and have them fix it. I assume they will stand behind the product.

Or pay to have a local smith to repair...

Yeah, that would disturb me too.
Last I heard, Taurus does stand behind their products and has a fairly decent customer service record. I'd give 'em a call before working on it yourself (Phone: (305) 624-1115).

The ambi safety coming loose seems to be a common problem with the Taurus. There are many posts where this problem is mentioned.

Ambi Safety

I would get rid of the ambi and convert to single-sided safety. Ambi safeties are not as durable as single sided safeties and are prone to breakage. I am left-handed and will not have an ambi safety.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great gun. The thing would feed a shotgun shell if I asked it to, and still put the bullets in a decent group. Thanks for the help yall.

Unless they have vastly improved since I last dealt with them, they have the WORST customer service in the industry.

If it were my gun, I was dedicated to keeping it, and I didn't want to be without it for 6 weeks, I would lump out the money for a local smith to fit a decent safety to my gun.

Ask me how I know.

OK, this is a great chance to see what CS is like....OP why not give them a call and report back on the answer / response?

Ok, ok, I'll be the guinea pig and call customer service. But if they say its gonna be more than two weeks I'm doing the safety install myself.

With all the reports we hear on Taurus CS I am really wanting to know what they say.

Thanks for calling them.

Internet rumor says they are going to release a 9mm 1911. IF the CS is ok I may have consider buying one.

unless they are EAA i would highly doubt Taurus has the worst costomer service

My goal would be and try and get them to pay shipping both ways,if they would i would consider letting them fix it.
If not id do it myself,or pay a smith as its a quik job.

I would advise some of the members in this thread to read the rules of this forum. In particular, read the stickies at the top. Past this point, offenders will be considered warned. Thank you.

FWIW, Colt just issued a recall on several 1911s for........ soft thumb safties and soft recoil guide assemblies.

Colt's Manufacturing Company LLC has determined that the Slide Lock Safety and the Recoil Spring Guide Pad in certain Colt model pistols were not manufactured to Colt specifications and must be replaced. All of these Colt models were sold after March 2007 and the range of serial numbers affected by this product recall is as follows:

1911 WWI Replica (O1911) From: 4597WMK To: 5414WMK
1918 WWI Replica (O1918) From: 1001WWI To: 3431WWI
New Agent (O7810D) From: GT01001 To: GT04505
Combat Elite (O8011XSE) From: CG10000E To: CG11293E
Defender (O7000D) From: DR33036 To: DR35948
Talo Night Defender (O7000NDF) From: NDF0001 To: NDF0400
Any manufacturer can have problems. Taurus is not alone.

Please let us know the facts of how Taurus handles this.

This problem shows up with a lot of ambi safeties regardless of the brand of safety or the brand of gun. It is not a Taurus only problem. I have seen this on Colts, Springfields, Kimbers, it doesn't make any difference. I have installed many ambi safeties on customers guns and I would never have one on any of mine. It can be fixed but usually only temporarily. I would advise anyone who does not really have a need for one to stick with a single sided safety.
