i did a search, but nothing came up, so i'm starting a thread on it.

i want to change the safety on my Taurus PT1911 from an ambi safety, to a standard sized, single side safety. does anyone have any recommendations for a replacement safety, and if i'd need to fit it, or will it require a smith to install it? i've done some minor work on other 1911's, like changing mainspring housing backstrap, changing triggers, and other stuff. the trigger required some filing to fit. will i have this issue with a safety?

i really don't like the ambisafety on my Taurus. it's the only thing i never liked about it, and i've finally decided to act on it, and change it out.

It will need fitting. Choose a good quality part that fits your application, narrow profile for carry, wide for a range or home pistol.

EGW, Wilson or Brown in that order would be my suggestions. Always check function after and ask questions if you get stuck.

thanks for the advice. i'll have to look at making this a weekend project. i'll probably con my brother-in-law to help, being the 1911 wizard that he is.

If you've never done any fitting then you might want to read up on it quite a bit. Take your time and check it often for fit and function. You can easily go to far and end up taking off too much. DO NOT use a dremel for this, files and stones only.
