LOP on an AR15 standard A2 stock

Yep.

An A1 stock is about .5" shorter.

A telestock is really handy if you wear a variety of clothing (like for multiple seasons) and/or backpack straps.

What exactly is the difference between an A1 and an A2? I didn't even know there was such a thing as an A1.

The A1 is what the original M16 and M16A1 had. The A2 is the stock on the M16A2 which came into service in the mid-1980's. The A2 stock is longer, which was slightly good for qualifying scores and bad for practicality. The stocks look almost identical without a ruler. Nearly all stocks on the commercial market today are the A2 size, but Cavalry Manufacturing (fka Cavalry Arms) makes an A1 length stock.

If my gun was going to be used primarily for cold weather hunting would one of these "short" A2 stocks be a good bet? Do they make differnt size recoil pads I could use to change the LOP? I hunt with a Winchester 70 featherweight now and I believe the LOP is 13 3/4. It doesn't really seem too long even with hunting clothes but I'm sure a half inch shorter may be even better.

If you're going to be hunting with various layers, you should consider a 6 position collapsable stock, if legal in your state.

Here are two high quality fixed length, shorter stocks:

ACE ARFX (13") and ARFX-E (10"):

Sully Stock (very well regarded):

The problem is that the shorter fixed stocks are designed for modern combat shooting (shoulders perpendicular to target) and body armor, and will probably be too short for you even with cold weather clothing. And a longer fixed stock may be too long. The ACE ARFX standard would be worth a look, as it's a nice intermediate length (roughly A1 length with the standard .5" pad, and it can be used without that pad, or you can switch to a 1" pad). Really, though, the adjustable length stocks are very practical if you can get past the looks.

I swapped out a 6-position stock for an A2 when I realized I hardly ever moved it, and the A2 stock is so much more solid.
