I just renewed my Alabama handgun permit that lets me carry concealed in public. Only cost ten dollars and would have took only a few minutes but I had to wait in line! Had another renewal and one new application in front of me and as I was waiting another renewal came in behind me.

I asked how may handgun permits were active in my county and was told about 8k to 9K. My county is Lauderdale and the population is very close to 90K so that means that about 10% of the population have handgun permits, and that 90K includes children and others not allowed to have handgun permits so among the eligible adult population here more than 10% have handgun permits.

There is no state database of how many handgun permits there are state wide. If the percentage state wide is the same here then as the population is aprox 4,700,000 then there should be about 450K to 470K concealed handgun permits in the state!

I like it like that! :)

How many CCW licenses or permits in your state do you suppose?:D

This puts to rest the scaremongering from the anti's......... blood in the streets, OK corral, etc.

I really don't know, but was walking the dog yesterday when a neighbor stopped in his car to say hello and chat. He asked me if I was carrying, since I OC a lot and proceeded to show me his Judge .45 that he keeps in the car. He admitted to having a CCW license, which I never knew he had. There are probably many others in my county that I'm unaware of.

Lots of people in Alabama have guns period. I can't count how many Browning logos I see on the back pane of pickups around here.

Hey JellyJar, you can add one more to the list. One of my long time friends went last week and submitted his application and received it a day ago. I've had mine for two years now! It's nice to find somebody else from the area on here! I'm from Florence.

Yeah, but if they are like my friends with CCW permits, they only carry 'when they think they need to :)confused:)" or 'just to have one in the car'

I see it as at least a partial negative. Guns left unattended in cars are often stolen. At least according to my local police reports. If you are going to carry you need to carry as often as legal and practically possible. Bad things happen when you are not expecting them and if your gun is in a car out in the parking lot or at home it does not good!

True but as many are stolen from homes. Very few companies will allow their employees to CCW while "on the clock" and Most don't even want firearms on their business premises. So take your pick, leaving your firearm at home or unattended in your vehicle, your choice. I am retired now but worked for many years in Birmingham suburb of Tarrant/Inglenook. I worked evenings, leaving work around midnight. Leaving my sidearm at home was never an option. The company I worked for AND the owners of the premises both had a no firearms policy. I don't know what part of Alabama you hail from but in my neck of Alabama almost ALL have CCWs simply to be able to carry in their vehicle since much fewer CCW on their persons.

I don't think this is an issue. If it is stolen, you are not responsible for what happens - just as if your truck was stolen and the guy drives thru the mall and kills someone

I bet a lot more stereos and speakers are stolen from vehicles - and think of the the pain and suffering that blasting c-rap music causes.

When I lived in Texas and had my CHL I could not carry into my company's offices either. I carried in a waist bag that I took off and double locked in the trunk of my car. ( You do know about double locking a trunk I hope? ). Other than that I carried almost everywhere I went.

My complaint about people leaving a gun in a car is when they go shopping or at gas stations or anywhere else they can carry and still choose to only have one in the car and not on them. Then they leave them in the passenger compartment where anyone with a rock or hammer can break the glass and steal it. Also, what are they going to do if they are attacked in a parking lot before they can get to the car? To be effective the weapon must be reachable when bad things happen and only carrying in a car and not on you when you can is not a smart thing IMHO.

Why should that concern anyone else? As long as it's legal,a person should be able to carry(or not) as suits them not others. You carry yours and I'll carry mine.

I don't like to see good people get hurt. Especially if having a gun on them could keep them safe.

I realize we are all adults here and must take responsibility for our decisions, but it still pains me when I hear of a good person who is hurt or killed by criminals when a small amount of caution, like having a good defensive weapon on them, could make all the difference.
