Renewal of CCW permit in VA?

I just noticed that my CCW permit in Virginia lapsed last week, and was wondering if there's anything special I should know about renewing it. I'm a Virginia resident, so it's an in-state permit, and my intention is to just drive to the county police station and pick up and submit a renewal form. Is the renewal more or less automatic, or will there be a lengthy waiting period? Do I need to take any more training courses, if I haven't taken one lately? Sort of stupid of me to let this lapse, but I've had other stuff on my plate.

I accidently let mine lapse also. All I had to do was complete the form, pay, and picked it up when my letter arrived...2 weeks tops.

RENEWAL APPLICATION:
Application for permit renewal should be submitted at least 45 days prior to expiration of your current permit. You must provide:
• Original completed application. Use the Concealed Handgun Permit Application. There is no separate renewal form.
• $50 processing fee. Please make your check payable to “Clerk of Circuit Court.”
• A self-addressed stamped envelope.
• One copy of the previous Concealed Handgun Permit issued by this Court or another Virginia Circuit Court.

If you're not yet a member of the VCDL, you should join up. They offer a permit renewal reminder. This is just a small part of what they do for all of us in VA.

Thanks for the info. The court offices are close so I'll just drop off the application tomorrow. I'll also join VCDL. Looks like a good group.

I gues it depends on your county rules....

Arlington told me that if my permit expired, I'd have to start the whole enchalada from scratch again, Application, Fingerprints, 45 day wait.....etc.

WOW! And i thought New York State was tough on permits. Just reading info on Virginia holders, seems like alot of work to renew a CCW. Up in NYS theres no expiration.
The permit is only revoked (or expire) if a crime or other form of irresponsiblity is commited. Also theres a National Instant Background check once every 5 years, it only means that if you go past five years and want to purchase a firearm, it is required to get the background done before hand and that takes 3-5 days. My county is finally switching to plastic permits sometime this year too. Good Luck on renewing those VA permits.

I don't see why some are saying the Virginia renewal is hard. Basically all you do is fill out your name, address, etc. and mail it in with $50. Takes about 5 minutes.

Just wanted to report back on this. I submitted my application for renewal on April 6th and received my permit in the mail on April 30th, so it took just slightly longer than three weeks.

At least here in VA he has the option to open carry without a permit, so doesn't have to go unarmed while waiting for his renewal.

VA permits are a piece of cake. Also, they are only Concealed Handgun Permits. No permit is needed to purchase or open carry a firearm. I really pity NY gun owners.

That's pretty good, only 3 weeks.

IIRC, state law sets a maximum fee of $50 that a locality can charge. The original info I posted was for his county.

Open carry includes being able to drive around with a handgun on the dash or the seat. In fact, unless you have a carry permit it's the legal way to transport a loaded gun. Good for residents and visitors alike, just don't get careless and put a jacket or newspaper over it.
