Love my new Green Mountain 10/22 barrel

A few months ago I decided to upgrade my 25+ year old ruger 10/22. I picked up the ruger when I was in college and have put thousands of trouble free rounds through it. I decided to change out the stock to a boyds Tacticool and the barrel to a green mountain 16.5" Fluted bull barrel. Those two upgrades plus a volquartsen hammer and I had a "new" rifle.

I went to the range yesterday and tried out my new toy. I just ordered some federal auto match, wolf match and fiocchi exacta but it has not yet arrived. So the only ammo I had on hand was federal 525 round count bulk. Once I zeroed the scope (Mueller 4.5-14 APV) I started to shoot some 10 shot groups (rested, on a sandbag). I am happy to report every 10 shot group was less than 1" (some just barely!) :D I cant wait to see what this new barrel will shoot with match ammo!

I'm in the process of helping my youngest trick-out his 1022. He'a saving for the funds to buy a Green Mountain barrel.

I figured that I had already gotten my money from 10/22 over the previous 25 years, so putting ~$300 into it essentially got me a new rifle. The Boyds tacticool stock was ~$105 shipped. The GM barrel, volquartsen hammer, tactical solutions mag release and Titanium Extended Auto Bolt Release were $200. A new CZ 452 will set you back $400 to get similar accuracy.

Two more things I forgot to mention...with the 25 year old factory barrel/hammer combo my average 50 yard group size was ~3" recently with the same ammo federal ammo. Also, I not a benchrest shooter so don't regularly measure my group sizes center to center or edge to edge with calipers. I use one, three or five inch target dots. I figure if all 10 holes are on the dot, then that is my max the group size.

Green Mountain.. Hummm.. I need to make mental note of that.

I spend a bunch of bucks on a 10-22 upgrade a few years ago and used the Volquartsen composite barrel with a SS liner.. Disappointing.. every other 22 I own will now out shoot it .. But Dang it LOOKS GOOD!!!!!

GM is a good budget barrel. They aren't going to keep up with a top tier barrel such as a Lilja or Shilen, but they shoot well enough for all but the absolutely most competitive situations and they cost about 1/3 the cost. I've got one I picked up a few years ago and it totally transformed the rifle. Sounds like you went with a great set of parts. Re-enjoy that rifle all over again.
 
Thanks Benzy2, with the price of centerfire ammo, my .22 AR upper and this rebuilt ruger will be seeing much more range time.
 
Congrats on the nice shooter! I went with a GM barrel (I feel they are by far the best bang for the buck) and VQ hammer in a hogue stock. Same scope as you too. You'll be very impressed with the match ammo. If all the holes aren't connected with mine at 50 yds. and about a half inch, it's shooter error.
I've had great results with CCI subsonic ammo, although it's recently been outshined by CCI green tag (too expensive), and wolf match target (winning).
 
wnycollector What are you useing for scope? You might find the GM barrel will break in and shoot better after a few hundred rounds too. You may also find with the ammo it likes best groups will drop to 1/2" or maybe less. Darn sure fun guns and they tend to collect that extra cash you have. I think most of us find that wolf/sk does shoot real good. but is starting to get pricey too.
 
You should see tighter groups with one load or the other for sure. I have a 2 very popular labels that my gm barrel does not like and shoots like your 1" group but nothing is tight . Just a kinda loose group. Others shoot well with all shots touching. Luck of the ammo
 
Two things to get for your 10-22. Or three depending how you look at it.
First, a good barrel or have the one on the gun rechambered for a "match' chamber. Ain't much difference in cost. You won't have to alter the stock if you have the barrel rechambered.
The other thing is to get is a PC hammer and an ADJUSTABLE sear. After installation you will get rid of almost ALL pretravel. The creep that is left is the sear being pulled across the hammer shelf. Do some research and find how to fix it. I simply shorten the shelf and slightly change the angle of interface.

I went to the range yesterday. I brought my "new" 10/22, a metal auto reset target with five 3" spinners and the remnants of a 525 round pack of federal bulk ammo. I popped the target into the ground at the 75 yard line and loaded up two of my old 50 round ramline mags and started shooting. One hundred rounds later...100 hits. My match ammo should be here tomorrow so next weekend should be interesting;)
