I am absolutely loving my brand new Kimber 84M Classic Select in .308 Win!!! It is gorgeously topped with a Leupold VX3, 2.5-8x36. I broke her in last night and tried a few different brands of ammo today. It really likes 150 grain Winchester Power Points. My best group was 5/8" and the largest was 1 1/4" at 100 yards. Surprisingly enough, it will shoot Hornady 165 grains at the exact same point of impact at 100 yards, but I couldn't get them to group below 1.25." To tell you the truth, Remington Core-Lockt and Federals shot about 1.5." Not bad considering the gun only weighs 6 3/4 lbs WITH the scope!

So, this gun has my blessing. It is a beautiful gun and I am glad I put the extra money into it (I worked hard for it too!) I can't wait for it to stop raining so I can hit the range again tonight!

I chose .308, mainly, because that's the rifle my local gun store has had on the shelf for many months. They had one in the box in .257 Roberts, but I'm not a handloader (yet).

Last summer I was set on getting something in .270. I tossed it up between Remington 700, and I recently thought I had setted on a Browning A-Bolt in .270. THEN...I had a chance to hold the short action Kimber. It just fits me so well - I'm only 5' 7". Without the scope it weighs around 5.5 lbs.

Most of my hunting in is the East TN mountains so lightweight is essential. And this thing looks SO pretty. It's a work of art.

I have one of the synthetic stocked Kimbers in 308. I'm amazed every time I take it out. Have the same scope on mine. Balances perfect, functions perfect, and at under 6 lbs scoped it is out shooting 10 lb target rifles I own.

My other rifles are gathering dust in the safe.

Congrats on your new rifle!

I have an 84M Classic Select in .257 Roberts with the same Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36mm scope. I agree its a great looking rifle and handles like a dream. I love that scope on it too. I took one deer with it last year. What a great rifle for hiking in the mountains!

But, I need a foul weather lightweight rifle as well. So, I was thinking of getting the 84M Montana version in 7mm-08, 260 or 308. 7mm-08 was the frontrunner. I already bought the scope for it, two years ago actually... Leupold VXII Ultralight 3-9x. Then, I heard rumors of an 84L in .280AI coming out and thought maybe I should wait for that instead. Now, it appears the 84L .280AI was an idea that did not come to fruition. I called Kimber about it... no definite plans to produce it at this point. They cited a lack of proof loads in .280AI as the reason.

Decisions, decisions!

Update: took the Kimber to the range and zeroed her in at 100 yards. Consistant 1" groups with Winchester 150 grain Power Points off of sand bags at 8x on the scope. I believe this gun may be able to shoot even tighter groups on a better rest, and especially with hand loads. I'm happy though with the Power Points!

Dan how about a photo of your rifle using a a tripod and timer for your camera? I would like to see the barrel to scope gap with the Leupold.

Cheers
