Hey all,
Tinkering with some 454 casull loads that are more than 45 colt but less than the ruger only 45 loads. Use is plinking mainly but ideally a 250-300 grain HC @ 1000-1200 fps. I have a trailboss load (250 rnfp over 9 grains of trailboss- taken from hodgdons website) that shoots well and is considered a max trailboss charge in a 454 case. I haven't chronographed these but hodgdon claims about 1000 fps for this load, feels very light and hits a bit higher than my sights are regulated for and I don't want to adjust them as they're dead on for my 360 grain load. Wanted to know if anyone has a recommendation on a load that I can get about 1200 fps out of with the 250 grain HC RNFP plain base bullets I like using. Usually only use h110 in this caliber or trailboss, I have unique, 2400, clays, titegroup, and a couple others on hand for possibilities but I'm not opposed to trying something new either.Any thoughts? Thanks.

You are looking for 45 LC loads that are in the “Contender” section of some reloading manuals.

This one is Speer but Hornady has a section for them as well. Looks like H110 will do exactly what your asking for.

You're essentially duplicating my favorite .44Mag load using a 240gr SWC over 10gr of Unique. That is the powder I would use. You could start at 10gr and adjust the powder charge from there for your desired velocity.

I would use the data for those Ruger/Contender loads and if you want to use your 454 brass add a bit more until your target speed or accuracy is reached. Bullet weight and dwell time in barrel druring recoil determine POI on target. Should be easy to find a load that works for you as long as you watch for over pressure signs.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. Haven't tinkered with unique much but I know it's required on every loading bench so I have a couple pounds laying around. You recommend any filler or it isn't too position sensitive ?

13gr HS-6 under a 250gr in a 45Colt case.
Don't want to use the colt case, there is a possibility of one of the rounds finding its way into the wrong gun.

Nervous to download h110, I use it exclusively for my heavy loads, a full case under a 360 grain gets me about 1375 fps, I bet it would put the 250 grain up around 1700 fps with a full case.

Nervous to download h110

I was thinking more like using 45 lc cases, the same way I use 38 spl brass, saving my 357 brass for their intended use.

Even in the .45Colt, H110 is better for getting 250's to 1400fps than 1200fps, or less. The slowest powder I'd use is 2400 and even it is not going to burn very cleanly.
