I recently purchased a used Remington Model 700 in 30-06 with a 6x Fixed Bushnell Banner scope. The scope has too little eye relief and is too high powered.

I was looking for a quality low power variable, maybe 1x4 or 2x7.

Any recommendations on scopes I should look at?

in the ridiculous to flat out silly price ranges, i have quite a bit of time behind nightforce 1-4x and a swarovski v6i 1-6x Extended Eye relief. the latter is amazing. i used to like the NF but not much anymore. folks i know who have used the meopta 1-4x have been pretty happy. I'm dying to try the newish trijicon 1-4x

I like the Burris Fullfield II 2-7 with the German reticule. I have one on a TC Encore 30-06 and a similar one on a Remington Model 7 7-08.

I am very interested in trying out the new Redfield 2-7 for my CZ 527M, when I can get the $ to buy one. Looks small and tough, and the new Redfield is getting a good rep, made by Leupold, IIRC.

One of my best scopes is a Kahles CL 2-7x36mm, the clarity and brightness are outstanding and the price is not horrible (only $500.00 if purchased through CDNN). I highly recommend this optic.

If you are looking for something of lesser cost the Nikon Monarch African in 1-4x20mm, the Nikon Monarch 2-8x32mm, and the Vortex Viper in 2-7x32mm are the best deals going IMO (all are sub-$300.00). The Sightron S-II BS 1.25-5x20mm is also a good optic, but at more than $100.00 more than the aforementioned, I don't believe the additional cost is justified.

How much you want to spend. The Nikon Prostaff 2-7X32 at around $130 is a decent scope for well under $200 and is the least expensive scope I'd recommend. After that the sky (and your budget) is the limit. Can't say anything bad about most any of the others.

Leupold will have the most eye relief, and they are usually significantly lighter than most of the competition. A VX-2 will cost around $300 for a 2-7X32. The 2.5-8X36 is only slightly larger and heavier and is my favorite all around big game scope.

Just personal opinion, but I prefer the 2-7's over most of the 1.5-5's simply because most of the 1.5-5's come with 20mm objectives. They are a bit of a disadvantage in low light compared to the typical 32mm objective found on most 2-7's. With the 2-7's set on 2X they offer plenty of field of view.
