I just put a 3X9 variable Redfield scope on my .308 BLR & am in the process of zeroing it.A buddy tells me to select one power (say 6X) & leave
it there as changing the power will change the zero. Is this so? If so how much & why did I waste money on a variable? Thanks.

Changing the power setting on a quality variable power scope should not change the point of impact. On inferior optics, anything can happen.

yup.

if you bought quality, change the power settings at will, and worry not. that is part of the reason higher-end scopes are...well, expensive.

i don't know anything about redfields, so no comment at all about their quality, or lack thereof.
