lower power 44 mag rifle loads with 2400 powder

Understood!
But #2400 doesn’t do well at the lower charges and lighter bullets he’s pursuing. The upper end of Unique loads puts him right where he wants to be, at slightly more than half as much powder...Besides clean burning, they’re quite accurate due to elevated pressures contributing to obturation of the bullet to bore.

I’ve been loading, shooting, and casting for 50yrs. Learned a few things along the way...

A 200gr bullet will do MUCH better with a faster burning powder. Much cheaper, too!
If he’s using a Marlin l/a he’s going to need a .431-.432” bullet as their bores are a tad large...

BTDT...

I understand what you are saying but you did not understand or did not read what he was asking or saying. He was not asking for advice for any other powder but 2400!! Let him try it and decide for himself if it works for him, or if that is what he wants.

He specifically stated
The fella who is about to reply ""dont go lower than established data" and the next fellas who is about to say "there are better powders for the job" yup I agree with both, have handloaded since 1996. Thing is, I dont know all the load data out there( some can vary a lot) . Regards better powders I have quite a bit of 2400 from when prices were down :). if I can get there with 2400 safely would be very handy.

The better question should be....why do I have two accounts here? :what::what::what:

Thanks Savvy jack, yes 2400 specifically for this task, and jacketed bullets as mentioned. I have some unique and CFE pistol but prefer to use it for lower powered/higher volume shooting.

Cant help with the two accounts thing though :)

LOL, yes, this one is on my home computer and the other one is on my work computer...both have the same email and maybe even the same password...!!!!

Let us know how the loads work out for ya

I've downloaded 2400, it works but it's not the cleanest. Might be better for carbine use than revolver , not sure. I don't have any specific load data but if your rifle can use 44 special brass the smaller volume may help some with igniting smaller charges.
We're all aware of secondary explosive effect (?), small charges of slow powder that maybe possibly potentially in theory could cause an undesired kaboom. It can't be replicated intentionally and it seems to have some mystery surrounding the causes but it's something I've heard about more times then it's actually happened (maybe?). Just putting it out there in case it's something you're unaware of.

If I were you, I'd just do the starting charge of 2400 and see what ya got.

I tried to do a deep dive fact finding on that explosive event, and anything I could find was limited to rifle and downloading rifle powders.... in this specific case 2400 is recommended in a lot of big rifle cases for downloading... I believe that pistol powders are exempt from that fenomina but any data to the contrary will be appreciated and taken seriously. I load 2400 in a 6.5x55 sweed and will stop if data is produced.

14 gr of 2400 will do it for you.....it will be messy- dirty and smoke.....but it will go band and be mild-

There are better powders for your application but these days SHOOT what you got-

Good luck and have fun-
