LR Magnum and 500 S&W Your experience?

I am starting to load the 500 S&W Magnum cart. The data with my Lee dies is for LR . Other data is almost non existent but shows LR primers only. Some posts here say use Magnum primers. What primer works best for you. Using a NEF Handi Rifle with these.

You can use LRM in place of LR primers. Just remember they will make the load a little hotter. Just start at the min. and work up watching for signs of over pressure.

Look in the load manuals. The type of primer is dictated not by the caliber or the firearm - it's the powder. Some powders require a magnum primer, some don't.

My Speer and Hornady manuals both specify LR primers, not LR-Magnum.

Thanks to all. The thing is that the present time LR Magnum primers are what I have more of and want to save the LR for other stuff. While the load data all shows LR in the references. The time has come for a couple new data books I guess as some here do use LR Magnum with success. I am reluctant to start lower than specs for standard loadings to try the magnum primers though without the data to back it up. Too cautious? That's me.

Whoa!

They make cases for Rifle primers AND Large pistol Magnum ones. The case is what tells
you what primer to put in it. The cases should be marked with a L and R between the
maker name for Rifle Primers. Be careful, if you put Pistol primers in a case marked for
Rifle, the primer will seat way below flush.

That could result in inconsisent ignition or hangfires.

Thank you for your info. There are some old and new style casings with pistol and rifle style primers and I understand that. I was asking about large rifle and large rifle magnum differences if you had tried them both. There have been other posts in the past with the rifle and pistol primer problems explained and I have read these also. The big thing is that 500 S&W is too new for my load data books I have presently. The propellant data books also have little info available. I will try to email Hodgdon and IMR and see if they have tested any LR Mag primers with their products.

I would not use LR magnum primers, too hot for not much gain.

I also haven't seen any loads published that use them.
