I'm about to workup a load for my .357 SW 686 using 158 GR LSWC. I've never loaded wadcutters. Do I need to use any lube on them in order to seat them into the case?

I've seen threads mentioning lubrication when loading wadcutters, but none that relate to pistols.

Thanks in advance

Is there a blue or red waxy band around the middle of the bullet?

If so, that's the lube; loads as is. If they are tumble lube type bullets (the sides will look like tin cans) that aren't lubed, or are some you or a friend cast, you could toss 'em 100 at a time in an old butter tub with a squirt of Lee Liquid Alox and swish 'em around until they're slightly brownish. Let them dry for 24 hours or so, so they're only slightly tacky to the touch.

They'll look like this (but have a light brown glaze):

I used to have S&W 686 and I loaded and shot literally thousands of rounds through that gun (possibly tens of thousands).

I used only Speer 158g LSWC bullets and worked up a really accurate load with Unique Powder and Federal Primers.

I never applied anything over what came on them from the factory. I used to buy boxes of 500 at a time and load on an RCBS Progressive Press. Once set up, I could load 600 extremely accurate catridges per hour on that press.

Like I said, ONCE SET UP.

Setting up and having all the components ready was "half the battle."

True wad cutters are flat on top, and either flat (DEWC) or hollow based on the opposite end , are not intended to be driven at velocities where leading will occur. You are loading a Lead Semi-Wad Cutter which was designed as a self defense-hunting bullet, and designed to be driven at higher velocities where leading can occur, so a good lube is needed if you are going to push them at higher velocities!

But as already noted, unless he made them himself, they are already lubed in the grease grooves when the maker sized them.

Those sure are pretty 158's Floppy D. I could not see them at work. (blocked)

The LSWC have a blue wax band around it, so based on all of the great information posted, I will load and seat the bullet as is.

A big thanks to all. This is an awesome site with fantastic members! I appreciate your help.

My best regards to all.

If you wind up with much leading from your loads come back and look through some of the past posts on the problem and what to do about it.
