My grandpa passed away a few years ago and had a small rifle collection. Well for Christmas this year, my uncle ave me a mini-14 ranch that my g-pa purchased a few years before he died.

To the point now, Since the style of action is that if an M1 / M14, is it best to grease it instead of oiling it? I've shot it once and lubed it like i do my AR's with Mobile 1 syn 0w30.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Oil is fine, but like the M14 and most semi-auto rifles, it will operate smoother and with less wear with a little grease.

Ive always used RIG grease with a few drops of oil before shooting and during extended sessions.

Mobile 1 is just fine, I use this with a mix of Marvel mystery oil. If you don't have a recoil buffer I recommend one also.

I had the stainless mini.

I used to clean the gun thoroughly whenever I was finished shooting for the day then oiled the moving parts with a Teflon-type oil (perhaps Break-Free). The only place I added a bit of light-grease to was on the cam and a bit in its corresponding-opening.

I had put at least several tens-of-thousands of rounds through that thing (that, being a conservative-estimate).

When I finally traded it, it looked like new and still shot like new. Never once did I ever have a jam with that gun.

That was another one of those guns that, in hindsight, I never should have traded. I guess I learned my lesson on the good guns I traded as I decided over ten years ago that I will never trade or sell a gun again.

It won't operate smoother or with less wear with grease than with Mobil 1. However, it will get sluggish and gummed-up quicker with grease.

The off shade white grease issued with the M1 &M14 butt well cleaning kit was the equivalent or may have been the same as Lubriplate(Special Marine Grease). This grease solved certain lubricating issues with the M1 rifle during WW2 and was still issued with M14 rifles in Viet-Nam. I’ve used this grease on M1–M14 and M1 Super Match rifles.

A minimal application on the cam surfaces should suffice for use with the Ruger Mini-14 series rifle.

Speaking from 30 years of experience I oil the small parts and use RIG on the cam & Lug surfaces and slots. It's hard to stop a Mini 14.

Mobil one 20/50 . I use what's left in the bottles when I change the oil in my Harley. I use it on all my pistols and rifles.
