I have a friend - a non-shooter - whose family is in possession of what is reportedly a WWII Luger bring-back. I'm no expert in Lugers, whether commercial or military. I know just enough to know that the value of those pistols to collectors can vary hugely based on the specific gun and provenence, etc. I'm not really planning to become such an expert, and my friend even less so. I'd like to be able to point him towards a dealer or other expert who would be able to examine the Luger, let him know what they've got, and ballpark the value for him. Any suggestions?

Bobby at B&B in Roswell moves more Lugers than anyone else in these parts for a long way. In my opinions he knows his stuff.

If you'd care to take some clear photos, all the way around, you could probably get a pretty good idea just by posting them here.

If the numbers on the mags match the frame, that helps a lot.

The first thing a collector is going to look for is numbers matching, then condition and who made it . Does the gun have a holster? Does it have a second magazine ? Does that mag have matching numbers to the gun? If it does, that small thing alone can increase the value of the gun tremendously.

Lugers are one of the biggest snake's nests in all the collecting world. If all numbers match, without a holster or second mag, and the original finish is present, even if almost worn off, the gun is worth four figures. It only goes up from there. Get a professional appraisal.

It's good to determine value but if your friend's grandfather or close relative brought the Luger back from WWII it would be a shame to sell it now.

Well, it's his wife's mother's gun, from his deceased grandfather-in-law. If they want to sell, then I just want to help them get a fair price.

But, yeah, I'd never sell something like that, especially with a family connection.

Update: Turned out to be pot-metal souvenir junk (complete with English-language stamping). Glad I didn't offer $500 sight unseen! Thanks for all the helpful replies.

Still, pictures might be interesting. Even some Luger copies have value.
