I got this info from Lyman instructions. Is this the way most of you that use this particular die set it up? Thanks! (
Adjusting the T/C die: With the shellholder at its highest pint, turn
your T/C die into the press until the dies’ bottom edge is just the
thickness of a matchbook cover away form the shellholder. Tighten
the die lock ring and the set screw. Your T/C die is ready to use.
Do not turn your T/C die to contact the top of the shellholder!
Carbide is extremely hard material which shatters easily if forced
against a hard surface, such as the shellholder. )

The Lyman carbide sizer I have protects the carbide ring by having it above flush in the die and having the steel rolled over it slightly, so if you screw it down all the way the carbide doesn't touch.

That said, what caliber? Makes a difference how far down it needs to be.

It's 44 magnum, I don't plan to load any 44 Specials. Thanks! :) my carbide ring is recessed also.

For straight walled revolver calibers the sizer does not need to contact the shell plate/shell holder, in fact I prefer them up a little for them.
