I recently invested in a Lyman Power Trimmer. Great machine and I have trimmed maybe 200-300 cases. I have small problem though. The trimmed mouth of the case is a bit rougher than my Forrester manual trimmer, requiring a bit more deburring. The manufacturer recommends a carbide cutter, which sells for about $45-$50. I have heard they work so well that it eliminates a lot of deburring/chamfering, but would like to hear from you guys out there before I plunk down another $50.

I went through the same anguish. I refused to pay for the carbide cutter but went through about 8 standard replacement heads. I now use the Lee cutter in a drill. It does a better job quicker and I can chamfer/deburr a case right after trimming so the whole case is done in a matter of seconds. It's also more precise than the Lyman with less length variation. Just my .02

I have the lyman universal trimmer with a power adapter with the regular cutter. I have noticed that if I put more pressure on the cutter it will make a rougher cut. I am still using the original cutter head and it does not show any signs of getting dull. Of course I do trim different cases and they make contact at different points of the cutter so dont throw it away if it gets dull with one caliber just use it for another. I get within +/-.003case lengths with mine. I started with the lee trimmer and I think that it is the best bang for the buck, but you are limited to one length unless you modify the trimmer.

I use the lyman, hand crank.Yes you need to buy the carbide cutter...
The one that comes with the trimmer,is made to get by,, and when they get dull.you push harder, and your not really cutting the brass,, your more like pushing it.and the trim is flat, from pushing harder,I been there,I had my trimmer for over 25 years, And for the time and efford. Get the carbide cutters, they last longer, and gives a better trim..Llke i said i have the hand crank.. So when I sit down and trim, 2 or 3 hundred 223s, my hand and thumb is kiling me.
your hands will thank you for the carbide cutter..

Hey 280shooter, Thank you for the feedback. Just got my Midway catalogue and they have the carbide cutter for $36, better than Cabela's for $45. I'll order today. A thought for you. If you can afford it, buy the power trimmer. I have a Forrester hand trimmer, which works OK, but my fingers were hurting too, so I bought the Lyman power trimmer at a gun show for a wholesale price. It has made big difference. It was recommended by a couple of commercial reloaders I know. Thanks again. Tom
