I had this orange lyman trimmer for alot of years, did alot of trimming.I did how ever buy one of the outside neck trimmers,, I cant that to work, when i turn the handle, it apears that the shaft is not turning correct,I think the bushing is shot,No way could the shaft be bent,I emailed lyman, they said send it back to them, they said the bushing is pressed in, so the factory has to do that,HAs any one had to send there trimmer back for bushing replacement,And does the carbide cutter make a big difference in trimming, I had bought the replacement cutter, but not the carbide,Im thinking i should have done that, Im not impressed with the reg cutters, this beats me up.Seems I push the brass back more then cutting,

I have a Lyman case trimmer :barf: I use it for straight walled handgun brass only, this thing is a POS in my opinion. For bottle neck cartridges I use a Wilson case trimmer.

I have been using the same Lyman Case Trimmer for over 30 years and have had absolutely no problems with it. Several trimmer heads have had to be replaced that had worn out before been replaced with a carbide head. Replacement heads should be considered normal wear and tear and not a defect. My trimmer is kept clean and well lubricated and I would expect it to last another 30 years. IMHO it is not a POS!
:)

loadedrounds experience matches my own, I love my Lyman UniveralCase trimmer, especially that case holder design.

If you are having to push it to cut you probably need a new cutter, now! The opional carbide trimmer cutter is just another cutter but it won't wear out for a looong time!

Not sure I understand. Are you turning the crank but the shaft isn't turning? If so, the crank is slipping on the shaft. If you have stripped that connection you need a new shaft/crank assembly but the trimmer is worth saving.

The only "problem" I encountered with the outside turner accessory was when I tried to take off too much in a single pass. Take light cuts, maybe .003" as with most other turners, until you get to the neck thickness you want.

I didn't like the fact that the cutter in the neck turner was recessed so far into the body cavity it was hard to see so I hacksawed and filed off a portion of the turner body to expose the cutter. Just a design thing, Lyman's engineer likes it one way, I like it another but it was easy to change.

neck trimmer

I cant even try to trim necks, this has a wobble in the end right out to the cutter,i tried a few rounds to see if i can get this set up,,NOT,, all it did was make the neck all cut up and out of round,i still say from turning that handle,i wore the bushing out of round,Yes my shaft is well lubed,,I did buy the 2 replacment cuters for lengh, but i think it should cut quicker, then it does, with a lot less effort, seems the cutter heads wear out fast,I lke to try the power adapter they have to add my drill,And the carbide cutter, I mean I have blisters from turning that handle,I had this for maybe 25 years or so,but i have changed the cutter heads more then a few times,

When outside neck turning (not trimming) do you have the pilot(correct diameter) installed in the unit where the cutter is? Have you full length sized your brass? The cutter movers forward using the 2 wheels that came with the kit, unscrew the 2 wheels, this is your cutting advance/feed for the cutter shaft. I have had my Lyman for many years, bushing is fine, its been used hard, i lube with Break Free CLP.

oh yes all the parts are where they should be

on your own shart, move it half ways toward the shell holder, now take hold of it, see if u have movement left and right an up and down,I have movement, and when i try to neck turn, the cutter head, that trims the out side of the neck,it wobbles like the tool is out of round or my bushing so worn it wont run square,Like i said i emailed Lyman, they said to send it back to them, they doult if the shaft if bent,How it would have ever got bent is well beyond me, and they said maybe the bushing is wore, and that its pressed in,Yes i have to 30 cal pilot in right ,i will work on it more ,but as far as outside neck turning,no way will this work,

i found my problem.

I fould the build sheet for the cutter head,It was Stevie Wonder,he machined the head off center,Its really out of round,i took the head back off,and set it up on my drill, sure enough, it wasnt machined right,No wonder this wont cut brass right,so much for outside neck turning,I will send this back, maybe they'll trade it for a carbide cutter to trim cases,,:fire:
Thanks for all the help, when i get one back,HOPE it will be a good piece i'll give neck turning a try again.

The carbide cutter isn't getting great feedback at Midway. I'm ordering a 3-pack of the standard cutters for mine. Haven't done any neck turning (at least not that kind), so can't help you with that.

Hey Mycarsz28,

I see you live in Harrisburg. I live across the river in Mechanicsburg and have also been using a Lyman case trimmer for over 30 years. If I can be of any help to you, give me a call sometime - 766-1026.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Perhaps some of you guys are having trouble with the new Lyman trimmers and the older Lyman trimmers may be fine due to when and where they were made.

Many companies have opted to ship their manufacturing over seas to reduce costs, but have suffered in quality at the same time.

I don't know if this is the case with the Lyman trimmer, but would be interested in knowing where the new ones are made. I don't have a case trimmer yet, but need to get one and want to buy a quality product even if it does cost more.

buy one

With its on self power, plug it in,use house power,VS your own arm and hand power to turn that crank,,My trimmers not junk,Just the outside neck turner is junk, and i will get lyman to replace it,I neevr used it to trim one neck,so i willl be sending that set up back tomrrow
