It's literally a ring of of metal, often a different color, set up into the bottom end of the sizing die. Some makers crimp the carbide in place by swagging the body over the ring ever so slightly, sometimes it's just flush.
The upper portion of the Lyman carbide sizing die used to be gold colored. Don't know if it still is, or when it was discontinued if it is not now. Mine are from around the late 60's.
